Many thousands of people visit Exposition Park each year but still many others consider the park as only the site of the Coliseum, temporary home of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Some newcomers to the southland are unaware of the many attractions of the park which include the Los Angeles County Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry of California, the Sunken Rose Gardens and various other recreational facilities. The many fine buildings, exhibits, spacious gardens and historical and natural history collections found within the thirty-acre park make it one of the most interesting parks to visit.
The Anakeim Bulletin Motorlog Party selected a 1930 Ford Fairlane 500 four-door sedan in which to make the short trip to Exposition Park, located at Exposition Blvd. and Figueroa. The Ford, which was supplied through the courtesy of McCoy Motor Company hardly had an opportunity to display its many qualities in the short run to Exposition Park. The power equipment made easy driving on the Santa Ana Freeway and the car performed with power and economy on regular grade gasoline.
Arriving at Exposition Park early in the day, we noted a large number of school buses discharging children of all grades in front of the Los Angeles County Museum. Groups of children were orderly while they awaited the moment that the huge doors would swing open to admit them.
Adults too, were finding time to visit their County Museum and were disconcerted to find that cameras must be checked at the door.
Exposition Park is bounded by Exposition Boulevard on the north, Santa Barbara on the south, Menlo on the west and Figueroa on the east and is easily reached via the Harbor Freeway which has off ramps convenient to the Park.
Throngs attending the many sporting events at the Coliseum have tramped through the beautiful landscaped grounds of Exposition Park, mostly without noticing the many buildings and points of interest there. Newest attraction in the Sports Arena now under construction.
Besides the acres of shaded lawn ideal for picnicking or strolling there are rogue courts, lawn bowling courses, playgrounds and swimming stadium.
A pleasant day can be spent visiting all these spots.
Known officially as the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art, it was founded on February 7, 1910, by contract between the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and four local societies, namely: The Historical Society of Southern California, the Fine Arts League, the Southern Division of the Cooper Ornithological Club, and the Southern California Academy of Science.
In the Museum area proper there are nine and a half acres. In 1923 provision was made for the inclusion of the La Brea tar pits under the Museum jurisdiction to take advantage of the generous offer of Major George Allan Hancock, who gave the 20 acre plot, now known as Hancock Park, located on Wilshire boulevard just east of Fairfax. The tar pits have yielded rich deposits of fossil animals and plants of the Ice Age such as the saber tooth tiger, the pyteroda actyl, mastodans, etc., of whose fossil remains are on exhibition at the Museum.
One of the highlights of the Museum is the natural animal groupings in the wings on the main floor. North American and African animals are reproduced in their natural habitat with amazing life-like characteristics. In LaBreal Hall in the extreme eastern wing of the first floor the bones taken from the LaBrea Tar Pits are on display. A skeleton of the Imperial Elephant which roamed the plains around Los Angeles thousands of years ago dominated the exhibit. On the lower floors a grouping of Indian artifacts of American Indian tribes is on exhibition.
Many pleasant hours can be spent browsing through the Los Angeles County Museum. The Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. a.m. 5:00 p.m. daily except Monday when the Museum is closed.
The sunken Rose Gardens of Exposition Park are famous world over. Some 5000 different rose bushes representing the most beautiful varieties of roses are planted here. Regular classes are pruning and care of rose bushes are conducted here. The Sunken Rose Gardens have long been favorite with southern California for a Sunday promenade. On summer day when the roses are in bloom there is no more beautiful spot.
Worth visiting regularly is a Museum of Science and Industry of California. Here is an exhibit of California's Industrial and Agricultural growth all within the cineses of one building. Model oil tankers, steel mills, and water stations; displays of prize cultural produce; relief maps; state, San Francisco, Los Angeles Harbor; and a company model train layout are just a few of the exhibits which show amazing development of our state.
Take a Sunday drive and enjoy the educational and entertaining exhibits which the Los Angeles County Museum organization has prepared.
