Supervisor Denounces Merchants Who Charge Excessive Sales Tax
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — County Supervisor Claire Nelson angrily denounced merchants throughout the county who charge a three-cent sales tax upon a 55-cent sale. His blast came during a supervisorial discussion of the price that the county would charge for copies of the 1958 building code supplement.
Seems that the building department has suggested that the booklet sell for 55 cents — 50 cents for printing, three cents sales tax, and two cents for handling.
Nelson noted that the tax should be two cents.
"This thing is a racket, and here we are doing the same thing," Nelson asserted.
"There's nothing the board of supervisors can do about it, but we should urge a state law that would require merchants to display a uniform chart, listing the tax upon every sum from a penny on up, the angry supervisor said.
He explained that under the present system, each merchant decides what will be the dividing line between a two and a three-cent tax.
According to Nelson, two cents should be charged on sales up to 62 cents, and three cents tax should be collected on sales between 63 cents and 87 cents.
He said he had been told by state sales tax people that the state is not particular as to how the tax is collected — as long as the state gets its money.
