Cancer Quack Bill OK'd for Assembly SACRAMENTO (UPI) — The anti-cancer quack bill designed to keep "unscrupulous persons from getting their hands on cancer victims and keeping them from receiving bona fide medical attention" was en route to the Assembly today after receiving Senate passage. Sen. John F. Thompson (R-San Jose), said the bill resulted from two years of study. The measure would create a cancer advisory council of 15 persons within the Department of Public Health. The council would arrange for testing cancer remedies and would pull quack cures off the market. The upper house passed a measure authorizing the investigation and said that the sharp practices "are the result of the operation of the so-called 'suede shoe boys' in this industry." They contract with homeowners to do repair work at a high price and then sell the contracts to someone else at an extremely low figure. They then take the difference and flee the area. DEAR ABBY: I am a widow and I live next door to a very young couple. We are good friends and they are my only neighbor. I live on a corner. Only occasionally do we visit each other, and both work. My problem is this: They keep their shades closed at time. It gives me such a lonely feeling to be completely shut off. They knew how I felt I am sure they wouldn't do it. If you'd print in your column they might see it. Thank you. DEAR SHUT: Don't expect even the friendliest of folks to be full view of their neighbors. They don't mean to "shut you out." Keep their shades closed to attain privacy, which is every right. IS IT SAFE TO GO STEADY? Get ABBY'S booklet, "What Ever Teenager Wants to Know." The Agriculture Department estimated Wednesday that this year's crops will be grown on about 339,000,000 acres, almost 9,000,000 more than in 1958 when farm output rose to an all-time high. The acreage in 1958 was the smallest since 1917 but record yields per acre produced the bumper harvest. If a similar production trend is maintained this year America's huge farm surpluses will grow larger. The Agriculture Department, reporting on farmers planting intentions as of March 1, gave details Girl Molest Suspect Arrested on Warrant By Orange County News Service A 45-year-old Compton man who worked as a custodian at Rossmore school in Los Alamitos has been arrested on a warrant and is being charged with child molesting. The Compan was in the empty room at on 16 crops to be planted to a total of 272,000,000 acres, nearly 3,800,000 more than in 1958. If farmers carry out their intentions, there will be acreage increases in corn, spring wheat, barley, rice, tobacco, peas, beans, sugar beets and sweet potatoes. There will be reductions in hay, oats, soybeans, sorghums, flaxseed, potatoes and peanuts. The increase in prospective acreage came in the face of a general reduction in government price supports. This was especially true in corn. The report showed farmers intend to increase their 1959 corn acreage by a whopping 12 per cent—$3,921,000 acres against 74,654,000 acres planted last year. While the department made no official production estimate, it said the announced corn acreage, with average yields, should result in a crop of about 3,700,000,000 bushels. Average yields, however, have been going up by leaps and bounds in recent years and actual production may be in the neighborhood of 4,000,000,000 bushels.
