Sound Warning To Amateur Psychiatrists
By DELOS SMITH
UPI Science Editor
NEW YORK (UPI) — Amateur "psychiatrist" have a warning from a professional, qualified man that the business of digging deep into people's minds can be dangerous — for the digger.
Dr. Philip F.D. Seitz was advising general medical practitioners on whether they could properly engage in psychotherapy despite their lack of specific psychiatric training, but his remarks applied as well to the amateurs who, martini in hand, try to find out what makes another party guest tick.
Amateur Ranks Growing
Professional psychiatrists are remarking, with amusement but also worry as to the consequences, on the growing number of amateurs who have read a book or have had personal experience with psychoanalysis and try to work out on anyone who'll stand still. "It's a psychiatric age," they say sarcastically.
But "psychotherapy has become a science with an established body of knowledge sufficiently comprehensive that it now requires years of study to master its principles and techniques," said Mr. Seitz to the doctors who have mastered only medicine in general.
As an example, Seitz told of a young non-psychiatric doctor who had heard of an experimental psychiatric technique for getting deep into the mind of a person suffering from skin disorders of emotional origins. The young man got in deep all right, and put in a hurry-up call for Seitz.
Should Have Training
"He sounded upset and frightened," Seitz said. "I went to the doctor's office, where the patient was found in a violent abreaction."

Should Have Training
"He sounded upset and frightened," Seitz said. "I went to the doctor's office, where the patient was found in a violent abreaction of rage, with the very frightened doctor trying to calm him. I had to take over the case because the doctor was clearly too terrified."
The general physician can safely deal with an emotional disturbance which is causing a physical ailment in his patient, if the disturbance is mainly because of something going on in his life at the moment, he said. This kind of person has adjusted well to his emotional problems in the past.
But persons "with long-standing illnesses and past histories of relatively poor adjustment throughout their lives are usually not good candidates for psychotherapy" from anyone but psychiatrists. General physicians should have some special training even to undertake psychotherapy for the people whose emotional problems are largely on the surface, he said.
Dinner Guests Cram Barron’s Dining Hall
BOSTON (UPI) — The Barrons live in a six-room ranch-style home. But sometimes as many as 40 relatives and friends sit down to dinner in the dining room.
Superior Judge Jennie Loitman Barron and her lawyer - banker husband Samuel wanted a house small enough for two but big enough to seat 40 for dinner. They solved the problem by having large dining and living rooms that open into each other in L-shaped fashion.
Crooner Says He Goofed On College For Sons
NEW YORK (UPI)—Bing Crosby believes he made "some especially bad mistakes" in bringing up his four grown sons, a newspaper columnist said today.
Hollywood columnist Joe Hyams said in the New York Herald Tribune that Crosby regretted letting his sons choose their own college after finishing high school and not forcing them to return to college after military service.
In the case of his singing son, Gary, Hyams quoted Crosby as saying he should never have given the boy a car as a high school graduation gift because the car gave him too great a sense of reckless independence at Stanford University.
"I guess it's too much to expect of a college freshman that he'll knuckle down to studying when there's a car outside a dormitory and opportunity to use it up and down the shore highways," Hyams said Crosby told him.
Crosby said he believed that eight years of grade school and four years at a Jesuit high school had provided "considerable restraint" on his sons. The crooner said the experience of going to college where restraints and supervision were relaxed was a shattering experience for them.
At the last count by the Department of Agriculture, the average American was eating 126 pounds of vegetables a year, compared with 100 pounds little more than 20 years ago.
Tahoe School Adds Letter to Three 'R's'
STATELINE, Calif. (UPI) — For about 600 students of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District an "S" has been added to the Three R's. It stands for skiing.
School authorities have designated skiing as a formal part of the school curriculum for pupils from the first to the eight grades. They receive 15 hours of instruction spread out over a nine-week course at Heavenly Valley resort in the Sierras.
Eric Sailer, former Auxiliary champion and Heavenly Valley school instructor, is in charge of the course. The children are offered as beginners, intermediary advanced skiers.
According to Chris Ku, Heavenly Valley general manager, "The training these boys receive provides them with the poise that city children get from ballet lessons or skating."

Rental Discrepancies Noted Of Congressmen
WASHINGTON (UPI)—Records showed today that some congressmen spent up to $100 a month in government money to rent office space back home from relatives, business associates and local political organizations.
The records covering a 12-month period through last June 30 were made available when house officials reversed an initial decision to withhold them from the public.
A spot check of the columnous vouchers and receipts for office rentals revealed that one congressman, Rep. Ralph J. Scott (D N.C.), paid $100 a month to his wife, Verna, for the use of his own law office in Danbury, N.C. Scott previously had leased the office to her and submitted rent bills for payment by the government.
The records also showed that: Rep. Jack Westland (R-Wash.) spent $100 of government money each month to share offices with the Republican Central Committee in a building at Everett, Wash.
