Bill to Make Judges Take Oath Introduced Prior to the Easter recess of Congress, Congressman James B. Utt introduced for enactment by the Senate and House of Representatives a bill which would make it necessary for justices or judges of the United States to take an oath of office. Before Utt introduced the bill, no such oath was taken by them in the past, and if the bill is passed it will be applicable only with respect to justices and judges taking office after the date of enactment, Utt said. The bill states that each justice or judge of the United States would take the following oath or affirmation before performing the duties of his office, as follows: "I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; that I do equal right to the poor and the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as _____. So help me God." Take a “Two-Mile Try-Out”... BIG DIFFERENCE IN RIDE AND PERFORMANCE No other low-price car can match Plymouth's Torsion-Aire Ride... yours at no extra cost. NEW YORK (UPI) — Airfreight could very well turn out to be the star performer in the jet age, air transportation industry. Airfreight has no competition for business as far as service is concerned. It can lift the traffic of any other form of transportation if, and that's the big "if," it can meet or come close to the rates of the competition. Turbine power, because it delivers far more power at less cost than a piston engine, promises a great strike in the effort to bring air rates closer to surface. For instance, the airfreight operator measures his costs in terms of cents per ton mile, a ton mile being one ton carried one mile. Dropping Costs Ten years ago the most efficient cargo airplane had a direct operating cost of around nine cents per ton mile. Direct costs are the actual costs of flying the airplane such as crew salaries, fuel, insurance and direct maintenance. As of today the Lockheed Constellations and the Douglas DC-6A's have brought the direct operating costs down to around six cents per ton mile. Turbine power has the capability when married to the airframe, of bringing these costs down to as low as three and a half to four cents per ton mile. Anaheim Servicemen by_jim moore David G. Ingrid Baby Expected, Gossip Column Says rating cost of around nine cents per ton mile. As of today the Lockheed Constellations and the Douglas DC-6A's have brought the direct operating costs down to around six cents per ton mile. This is extremely close to the direct operating costs of the transcontinental truck lines. Today, the airfreight operator's indirect costs amount to about eight cents per ton mile. This is relatively high as compared to the surface operator's indirect costs. Principal reason for this is the rather meager number of ton miles to be spread over the system of stations. Further Reduction With the increase of traffic, or ton-miles, to be expected from a rate reduction these indirect costs will be reduced by 40 per cent or more. Thus it appears reasonable that the jet airplane can reduce present air freight tariffs by almost 50 per cent, or down to the 11 or 12 cents per ton mile level as compared to today's 20 cent tariffs. Whether this turbine power for the airfreighter will be straight jet or turbine propeller (turboprop) is still in debate. There are many advantages in both systems. At present the turbo-prop appears to have a slight edge in operating costs. The airplane will be at least a couple of years in coming into being. But one thing is crystal clear: that cheaper power is now available to give airfreight its golden opportunity to move in and become a major part of the nation's freight transportation system, even larger than today's air passenger traffic. Planned by British LONDON (UPI)—A British engineering firm today announced plans to build the world's first atomic cargo submarine—a vessel that could revolutionize sea transport. The Mitchell engineering organization said it plans a 50,000-ton, 600-foot nuclear-powered submarine that could travel under the ice into Canada's Hudson Bay the year round. Valuable ores mined in the area build up during the winter because surface vessels cannot get through the thick ice into the bay to transport them to smelters. A spokesman for Mitchell engineering said the planned submarine, nicknamed the "Moby Dick," would cost around 54 million dollars. He said it should be ready about 1967.
