Records Fall at National AAU Swimming and Diving Championships entered their third and final round today after a sizzling second round in which six new records were set. Four new meet marks and two new American standards were set in last night's final competition. Three meet and one American records were broken in afternoon qualifying heats, but were broken again in the finals. In the big race of the night, Bill Woolsey of Hawaii set a new meet record of 2:08.2 by winning the 200-meter free-style race some four yards over Hawaii's famed Ford Konno, the defending champion. Hawaii's backstroke specialist, Yoshi Oyakawa, broke the meet record in qualifying for the 100-meter backstroke event, then broke that meet record in the finals with a 1:05.3 clocking. Bill Yorzyk of the New Haven Swim Club set a new meet and American record of 4:28.6 in the 200-meter butterfly after breaking the meet record in qualifying. The new Haven Swim Club foursome of Pete Kennedy, Charles Hardin, Sandy Gdeonese and Yorzyk clipped the American and meet marks in the 400-meter medley relay in 4:28.6, shattering their qualifying performance which also broke both records. At the end of yesterday's second round the Hawaii Swim Club led with 31, while New Haven Swim Club was close behind in second with 30. North Carolina State in third, was far behind with 22. The local anglers shipped out of Norm's Landing on the "Adele" skippered by Phil Tozer. Herman Lenz landed the jackpot fish of the day a 24 pound longfin. The fishermen are sure that the albacore are moving in between San Clemente Island and Catalina. The Anaheim fishermen aboard Tuesday were, Floyd Trapp, Sam Landa, Bill and Clarence Mauerhan, Dick Henning, John Mary, Nick Gregg, Tony Bouck, Vince Peltzer, J. R. Hulton, Doc Cummins, Leonard Buous and Herman Lenz. Balboa Pavallion reports that the "Frontier" fished locally Sunday and thought it was a better idea if they left the albacore alone for the time being. They reported that they enjoyed some good bottom angling with all fishermen on board getting their share of fish. The dock fishing has been holding up very well with the anglers getting halibut up to five pounds and the sea trout are biting very well and they are also as high as five pounds. The anglers are all using live anchovies. Davey's Locker of Newport Beach report that the anglers have been getting a few longfins but they are still having to go on a four and a half hour boat ride each way to catch 'em. The best catch of the week was on the "Happy Landing" skipped by Gil Smith where ten anglers caught 21 albacore. The longfins are running rather small with the large one going about 14 to 18 pounds. Samme Roach, the affable skipper of the "Esta Nada" operating out of Davey's Locker at Newport Beach took the day off last week and went out for a fishing trip. The feminine skipper hit the jackpot as she landed a 165 pound giant black sea bass. The battle lasted 45 minutes before Samme could land the monster. Why Suffer? SPORTS By MEMORANDUM BULLETIN SPORTS EDITOR The racing scene in Southern California shifts next week from "beautiful" Hollywood Park to "larger and lovelier" Del Mar—or so the men who operate the plant have announced. Del Mar, where the surf meets the turf, opens Wednesday afternoon to be more explicit. The track operators call it the vacationland track and there is no one who can dispute them. It is with a great deal of anticipation that racing fans await the opening of Del Mar each year. It is also a race track where you find persons who are not particularly racing enthusiasts marching through the gates. The location of the track, the summertime urge to drive along the sea coast and the warm afternoon and evenings make it a mecca for Los Angeles vacationists who desire to get away from it all for a day. The turf-surf course swings into a 40-day session and the plant has been almost completely renovated for its 16th opening. "We have spent more than a million dollars in improvements since last summer," said Eddie Read of the public relations dept. "The major building projects include the addition of a 2400-seat grandstand and a new building to increase facilities in the turf club and clubhouse." This construction enables Del Mar to increase its capacity 38 percent. DEL MAR TO HOST 1200 THOROUGHBREDS "On the racing front itself," said Read, "more than 1200 thoroughbreds should tax the capacity of the stable area. "For the first time, we intend to send out fields of 12 starters. In the past, ten starters had been the limit. We have made the suitable adjustments on the tote board," Read explained. The reason Del Mar only sent out fields of ten starters is a throwback to the early days when horses were nearly as scarce as customers. The management of the track had to wait for the daily train from Los Angeles to arrive with its complement of the faithful before giving the nod to the bugler to blow "boots and saddles" for the first post. All-Star Squad Fullerton Entertains Junior Legion Foes FULLERTON (OCNS)—Baseball at its best will be played Saturday and Sunday at Amerige Park. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, the first annual fifth area Junior American Legion Baseball Tournament will get underway. Reward for the champion—a bid to the state tourney in Fresno. San Diego Hoover Post 492, defending area and national champs, will be present, as will last year's area runner-ups, Upland, and unreleased Fullerton. All three teams are district champs. San Diego enters the tourney with an impressive won-lost record of 15-3 for the season. They have just two regulars back from last year's high-powered team, but have numerous players up from a good Hoover high team. 300 GAMES Pittsburgh—Most sanctioned 100 bowling games in 1954 were live, recorded by Pete Kozloski of Plains, Penn. ANGELS' PIKTUZIS HURLS NO-HITTER HOLLYWOOD (UP)—Ben Wade's five-hit pitching carried the Hollywood Stars to a 3-1 victory over Oakland Thursday night and to within six and a half games of the Pacific Coast League lead. Hollywood will try to make it two in a row tonight over the Oaks at Gilmore field with Roger Bowman (3-5) against George Bamberger (9-7). Hollywood Manager Bobby Bragan provided the key hit in the victory Thursday night as he doubled. The Los Angeles Angels, only two games out of fourth place, will try to follow up George Piktuzis' no-hit 2-1 victory over San Francisco Thursday night with another win tonight behind Hy Cohen (3-6). The Seals got their run in the seventh when Piktuzis walked Mike Baxes, who went to second on a walk, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly.
