Broadway KE 5-5703 (across from post office) Mary Lou Martin Surprised by Friends at Lovely Luncheon Friends of Mary Lou (Mrs. Gordon) Martin, chose a luncheon hour at the Water Wheel as an appropriate time in which to honor her recent birthday. Under pretense of seeing a fashion show, Mary Lou was ushered into the banquet room. Extreme surprise and happiness was registered by the honoree as her friends greeted her with "Happy Birthday". Depicting her station in life, the tables were decorated with seven dolls gowned to portray different phases of "The Dance". The centerpiece was a ballerina dressed in pink tutle trimmed with maribou and sequins, which revolved atop a music box over an array of netting. Pastel flowers adorned the table as well as tiny gold ballet slippers. Following the luncheon, lights were dimmed and curtains were opened before a table displaying an enormous beautifully wrapped present beside which were two large cakes, especially decorated for the occasion and brilliant with candles. Upon opening the "gift," smaller boxes, humorously wrapped and some of a decidedly comical nature, created an air of hilarity and fun for all. Gracing the head of the table, Mary Lou was honored on either side by the presence of her grandmother, Mrs. Gus Mennes, and mother-in-law, Mrs. Lenoir Richards Martin (Mrs. Ernest Martin). Also present were her mother, Mrs. Ralph Mennes; her sister, Mrs. Harold Weir, and aunts, Mrs. Arthur Martin, and Mrs. Everett Martin. Others sharing the event were Mrs. Richard Beveridge, Mrs. Robert Porter, Mrs. Robert Miles, Mrs. Jess Taylor, Mrs. Charles Nash, Mrs. George Dierberger, Mrs. Martin Blum, Mrs. Keith Murdoch, Mrs. Dennis Deneau, Mrs. Floyd Kiker, Mrs. Edward Real, Mrs. Ruby Nixon, Mrs. James Auest, and Mrs. Richard Rosenthal.
