Crooker appeared at a preliminary hearing yesterday before Municipal Judge Leo Freund who set the former law student's arraignment for nearby Santa Monica Superior Court. Crooker was ordered held without bail pending trial. Meanwhile, a well-known local criminal lawyer, Mrs. Gladys Towles Root, took over Crooker's defense. She said she had been hired by the former houseboy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Crooker Sr., of Bucksport, Me. Crooker is accused of stabbing Mrs. McCauley, a divorcee, in her fashionable Bel-Air home after she spurned his affections. Next week, Prato returns to the show to announce whether he'll take $8,000 or try for the $16,000.
