DEBUT, BUT NO DEBUTANTE
Junior Makes Bow--And How
By PETER HAYES
United Press Sports Writer
Vern Stephens, Jr. making his Pacific Coast League debut after 15 years in the majors, socked a grand-slam home run last night to give the eSattle Rainiers a 4-0 win over Los Angeles.
The former Boston Red Sox slugging star's circuit clout in the sixth inning backed up a brilliant two-hit pitching performance by Lou Kretlow and kept the Rainiers two games behind the league-leading San Diego Padres.
Kretlow now has won four games - all shutouts - and lost none.
Loser George Piktuzis (4-4) and Bob Coats each hit singles for the only hits off Kretlow. The Rainier pitcher fanned seven and walked seven.
In other games, Sacramento cooled off rookie pitching prospect Lowell Creighton in downing San Francisco, 6-5; San Diego eased past Hollywood, 3-1, and Oakland scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat Portland, 5-4.
Creighton Walks Five
Creighton didn't have the control in Sacramento that he had last Sunday in shutting out San Diego, 1-0, on three hits in his first pro game. He walked five and yielded five hits before being derricked in the fourth inning when the Sacs scored five runs.
Rapp Still Hankers 'Bit Of Giant'
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Earl Rapp, formerly of the New York Giants, is still "a bit of a Giant" when it comes to hitting in the Pacific Coast League. The San Diego outfielder is batting .328, is tied for the lead in homers with 22 and leads in runs batted in with 101.
Johnny Briggs, Briggs, Sacra ace rookie, was credited with his 10th win against seven defeats but he wasn't around at the finish. Milo Candini took over in the eighth after the Seals had rallied for two runs and had two on with one out. He retired the next two men but he ran into trouble himself in the ninth and needed help from Bud Daley.
In Hollywood, Eddie Kazak raped a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning to give San Diego a 2-1 lead which Cal McLish (9-5) protected the rest of the way.
Load Bases In Seventh
The Pads loaded the bases again in the seventh and brought in their final tally on a fielder's choice.
Al Federoff paced San Diego's 13-hit attack with four singles in five trips. Starter and loser Wade (2-1) yielded 11 of the safeties.
Trailing 4-3 going into the tom of the ninth, Oakland lost the bases against reliever Burtschy (1-3) and George Kovich drove in the tying run to a sacrifice fly. The Oaks got bases loaded again and Joe Rene dropped a Texas league to short right to bring in the ning run.
Kirrene, recently obtained for San Francisco, drove in three with a single, a double and triple. Karl Drews, (6-9), who lived Don Ferrarese, took win.
Hopes Run High For New Mark
ABOARD THE USS GRESHA At Sea (UP) — Hopes ran today for establishing a new word in the Transpacific Yaw Race to Honolulu as the first running schooner Raoma passes the half-way point.
The Ramona, scratch boat the 2225-mile race, messaged Coast Guard cutter that she been averaging approximately knots since her departure from San Pedro, Calif., last Monday.
Closely following the Ramona entry of San Francisco's St. Francis Yacht Club, was Commodore Richard Rheem's ketch Morrone Star under full sail. The Morrone Star, of the Los Angeles Yacht Club, holds the record of 10 days.

Fullerton Still Rolls On
By Duke Fischle
Fullerton defeated Anaheim, 12-2, last night at La Palma Park for the second-straight time and for their twelfth straight win without a defeat in Junior Legion League play. With the win Fullerton has sewed up the league title even though they have two more games to play this weekend.
Fullerton started out early as they scored twice in the first and eight times in the second. Alan Story was a surprise starter on the mound for Anaheim, but he didn't last long as he lost control in the second. Fourteen men came up in the second as Story gave up only three hits, but walked seven and hit one batter. Vern Weaver then came in to pitch the rest of the game and did a great job in walking none and striking out eight—six in a row in the fifth and sixth innings.
Anaheim's two runs came in the sixth inning on no hits and two errors and four walks by
Fullerton pitcher Ken Enright. Enright gave up but three hits and struck out seven Anaheim boys.
Anaheim plays their final league game on Sunday at La Palma Park against Garden Grove and game time is 2 p.m. Anaheim also play Garden Grove on their home field today.

Albacore Expected to 'Move In Any Day Now'
By WALLY TAFT
Albacore schools may move into the channel between Catalina and San Clemente Islands within the next few days.
The optimistic prediction was on the lips of many a veteran deep-sea angler early this week, following reports Monday that advance echelons of the longfins had moved shoreward some 20 miles in the past five days.
Reports had sportfishing and private boats picking up spotty catches of the prized fish about 12 to 15 miles northeast of the east end of San Clemente Island with the schools moving closer every day.
Long Beach and Newport private and sportfishing boats comprised the bulk of fleet fishing for albacore over the weekend and many of the boats came in with their albacore flags flying.
Most of the catches taken so far have been jigged aboard though several bait fish have been landed. Last week one private boat came in with 17 fish and the owner reported that the water underneath the boat was black with albacore and that they were hitting all color combinations of jigs and feathers thrown at them.
Oceanside and San Diego boats are also fishing albacore daily.
Overton Arm taking the play away from the bass, it was reported.
Night fishing at Vegas Wash paid off for all anglers that tried their luck for cats as most fishermen checked in with heavy catches. Not many people were on hand to take advantage of the run, however. Strong winds that were blowing during the day took the toll of most anglers as they went home in order to play it safe.
Lake Irvine officially closed its 1955 fishing season Tuesday, owner C. H. Stevenson revealed. The popular fishing spot is located in a general fire closure area. The anglers who tried their luck at Lake Irvine this year reported that the fishing was some of the best they have had in many a day in this Southland lake.
Big Bear "face lift" to improve fishing conditions as they are busy cutting and clearing weeds to make the fishing easier for
the many anglers who come to this high altitude lake for their angling.
Bluegill fishing has started to pick up with many nice catches checked in of late. Nice bass were reported to have been boated off Boulder Bay at the east end of the lake.
The weather conditions in general have been good with some moderate winds coming up in the afternoon.
