SPORTS By Ed Mullen MEMORANDUM BULLETIN SPORTS EDITOR When Manager Bucky Harris of the Detroit Tigers handed torrid-tempered Ferris Fain his unconditional release the other day, he said only that he wished Fain "luck" Behind this official reason was the report of a series of heated arguments between the fiery first sacker and other players and coaches... Fain got into a squabble with first baseman Earl Torgeson on a train ride recently and Torgy is by no means out in left field when it's time for a temper to boil... While Fain was a crowd pleaser at Philadelphia, Torgeson also caused lumps in the throats of Boston National League fans by his hair-raising displays of scorching temper... Harris had to cut loose from one of them and Torgeson is a wonderful competitor and popular with other players on the team... Fain wasn't—and his "gimpy" knee undoubtedly iced the decision. Meanwhile, Pacific Coast League fans might be seeing something of Fain... President Damon Miller of the San Francisco Seals is hot on the trail of Ferris, who broke in with the club in 1939... The hobbling Fain is already considering an offer by Miller. "He's got to be able to play first base, though," said Miller. "I don't want him as just a pinch hitter."... Seals' officials are buzzing the wires of Tiger coaches about the condition of Fains' knee and the possibility of his holding down a regular spot... "I'm glad to hear that Damon is thinking about the old Burr," Fain was quoted as saying. "I'll make my plans in a few days after a rest." FAIN COULD EASILY SHAKE GOODWIN Fain's appearance in the uniform of a Seal would be just the thing to add another wrinkle or two to the already wrinkling brow of Coast League President Claire V. Goodwin... The Coast ballplayers are launched on an attack on PCL umpires and just about every day is open season... Manager Tommy Heath of the Seals is already under suspension and faces a hearing for his squabble with umpire Al Mutart... Heath is also paying a $50 fine... If Fain's knee permits him to play, the players have another strong-voiced ally in their day by day crusade against the umpires... If Fain does join the Seals, Goodwin's periscope will be sharply focused on that San Francisco infield... Bet he's already squirming a BASKETBALL Anaheim Nets Tie for Second In Summer 'A' Allison's Market of Anaheim moved into a tie for second place through a strong second half finish to defeat Carr Originals of Santa Ana, 26, last night at an Anahe summer 'A' league basketball game at Western Jr. HGym in Cypress. Goodwin at first imposed a $50 fine and added an indefinite suspension after Heath and Mutart indulged in shoving tactics over a close call at first base during Sunday's doubleheader with San Diego. Heath was scheduled to appear before Goodwin yesterday for a hearing, but a league spokesman said the two men discussed the matter over the telephone and the suspension was reduced—but the fine remained. Bulletin — 3 New One-Day Record Sailing Mark Aboard The USS Gresham at Sea. UP—William Pome-roy’s 109-foot schooner Ramona sped along far ahead of her nearest contenders today after seizing the lead by setting a new one-day run record of 303 miles. The Ramona’s record performance, logged yesterday behind a 40-mile wind, broke the old mark of 288 miles in a single day set in 1926 by the yacht Invader in the Transpacific race to Honolulu. The representative of the St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco last was reported about a third of the distance to the islands, or some 1605 miles from Diamond Head, the finish of the race. The craft, biggest boat in the race, stands a good chance of breaking the record of 10 days, 10 hours and 13 minutes set in 1949 by Commodore Richard Rheem’s Morning Star if favorable winds continue. The Ramona grabbed the lead yesterday by sweeping past the Morning Star. Frank E. Hooyaa’ schooner Constellation also passed the Morning Star to move into second place. Earl Schenck’s ketch Eleuthera, of Seattle, Wash., continued to be the big surprise of the race. For the second straight day the ketch was leading in over-all handicap time. The Constellation was second and the Marie Amelle third. The Ramona, as the scratch boat, must finish five and a half hours ahead of the Morning Star to win Class A honors. But the Constellation has a handicap of one day, one hour and 46 minutes and on that basis could emerge the handicap winner.
