Committee to Investigate If Finns' Rights Violated
WASHINGTON (UP)—The state Constitutional Rights Subcommittee will hold a public hearing to take testimony on whether rights of the Finn twins have violated in their intense fight against the government over their surplus cargo plane.
Sen. William Langer (R-N) said yesterday Chairman The C. Hennings (D-Mo.) assured the hearing would be held as soon as it could be arranged. The year-old brothers are in the Springfield, Mo., Federal Penitentiary where they are serving a sentence for "obstructing" an Attorney.
Langer visited the twins, Grace and Charles, in their cellar week. He said they agreed to their 10-week hunger strike after he promised them a hearth.
"I am not satisfied with treatment accorded the Finn by the U.S. Government," Langer said in a statement. "Until proven to the contrary, I am isfied that their constitutional rights have been violated."

State Business Up To $3.9 Billions
SACRAMENTO (UP)—California business boomed to a new record of nearly four billion dollars during the first quarter of this year, the Board of Equalization said today, "Phenomenal automobile and farm implement sales and a substantial recovery in business from the recession low of a year ago" accounted for the record, the board said.
The board said it based its total on the $3,903,219,000 in taxable transactions during the first quarter, which was 17.5 per cent higher than last year and nearly 10 per cent more than the previous record first quarter.
Part of the total, the board said, consisted of figures submitted by business for self-assessment of sales taxes.
Sales by retail outlets accounted for $2,717,391,000 of the total, personal service establishments' business went up to $120,699,000 and reported taxable sales of manufacturers, wholesalers, contractors and other outlets climbed to $1,065,129,000. All were up between 15 and 18 per cent over last year.
Sales of new car dealers skyrocketed to $624,305,000 during the first quarter to dwarf all previous records, the board said, a 46 per cent improvement. Californians spent another $86,417,000 for used cars to boost the used car business up 26 per cent.
Only music stores, food stores other than grocery stores, and restaurants and bars not selling hard liquor were unable to better their 1954 sales levels. Their total was only four per cent of the total business transacted.
