HOLLYWOOD — A producer of television shows for children bears a generally unrecognized responsibility for their education and moral fiber second only to parents and teachers, asserts Jack Denove, Hollywood TV film producer.
"Children don't get their stories from books anymore," the bushy-haired, dynamic producer told me. "They watch television and read comic books, and of the two the impact of TV is far greater."
The producer of such universally acclaimed video series as "Cavalcade of America," "This Is Your Music," and the "Christophers," believes that the moral principles, education, and patterns of personal conduct children absorb from watching television will remain with them all their lives, affecting the nation's future and mankind in general.
"The producer who ignores the effect his shows have on the nation's young is dangerously irresponsible," says Denove.
But Denove is not an unrealistic do-gooder. He believes that sex or "romance" as he prefers to call it, and horror have their place in TV programs.
"I believe in sex. Romance is healthy. What is wrong, however, is incorporation of suggestive sex in TV shows. There is a place for horror in video plays too, provided the horror is a vital and necessary part of the play. What is very wrong is staging or horror for horror's sake."
Asserting that while television is the greatest communication force since speech itself was invented, Denove pointed out that it is in itself a "conscience-

Over 11 years, he quit to go advertising, and in a decade used to the position of execusecretary and a plans board member of a major New York city. As an agency executive, unchained "Robert Montgom-Presents," and succeeded in experts said couldn't be put "Your Hit Parade"
on television.
During the war, Denove, then 34, volunteered for the infantry, but was transferred to the air corps. As a radio operator on combat cargo carriers in the Far East he flew the "Hump" hundreds of times, sometimes fighting off Japanese Zeros with pistols and flare guns. He earned four air medals and three Flying Crosses.
He formed Jack Denove Productions in 1951, and since has produced 115 "Christophers," 200 "Cavalcades," and 26 episodes of "This Is Your Music." In addition to hundreds of TV commercials.
