TOM DANSON'S ... TV-RADIOLOGIC
TUESDAY, JUNE 29 — A whole town joins forces to protest one of its citizens against a gang of desperadoes, in a drama, "Valley of Shadows," on "Fireside Theater" tonight at 9 over Channel 4. The moral issue each citizen must decide for himself — whether to aid the man, despite the possibility of retribution by the gang — is the theme of the tele-drama . . . At the same time on Channel 7, a radio contestant, who wins the privilege of spending a week end at the home of Danny Williams (Danny Thomas), spoils Mrs. Williams' carefully laid plans for a quiet two days with her peripatetic husband, during "Make Room for Daddy." . . . Walter Matthau and Polly Rowles appeared together in a Broadway hit five years ago, but they'll do their first emoting opposite each other tonight during TOM DANSON "The Human Touch" on Channel 7's "Center Stage" at 9:30. "We were in 'Anne of the Thousand Days' together," said Miss Rowles, "but we didn't have any scenes together. The most vivid recollection I have of Walter is of him striding around backstage in Elizabethan tights and smoking a huge black cigar." . . . "Top Plays of 1954" is featured in the 9:30 time slot for Channel 4 featuring Ida Lupino and Jack Lemmon in "Marriageable Male."

"We'll tell you when you come in. Put on your glad rags now. Joan, because we're going to have ourselves a time. Tomorrow night at six, then. We'll meet here in our hotel room. Right?"
"Right!"
It was good to leave work early, sticky rags and wads of steel wool and crumpled sandpaper and dish shorts. Joan dressed in a shirt black that had an accordion pleated skirt and a brief bolero jack. Her pumps were black, too, and she carried a small black handbag. But on her bronze gold hair she perched a tiny white hat with a flying half veil and on one shoulder she pinned the fragrant white gardenia that Todd brought home to her.
He surveyed her with pride and pleasure as she turned before her as they were ready to start.
"All I can say is that many become you, Mrs. Hunter They drove the old jalopy to George Washington bridge when they parked it. From here it was easy to catch a bus across the river and the subway downtown.
What an evening! Nothing spatacular, as Joan remarked afterward, just nice and complete restful and a wonderful change. Joan, who, except for the day we Betty and the day at Jones beach had not been out of Mapleton since the return from their wedding trip. She had been given rent from her hot little apartment and hotter kitchen by invitations; her mother's screened veranda for dinners now and then, or to buy big cool manse dining room Sunday night suppers. And sometimes, when the mosquitoes were too bad, she and Todd had eaten out-of-doors on the back lawn. This was the first "dress-up party since their marriage.
They met Pamela and Tom their hotel and from there the foot of them went to a roof garage where there was a lovely breeze delicious dinner, a good floor shiny and a smooth orchestra for dancing.
"It's been ages since we've done anything as frivolous as this Joan said to Pamela. It's the first time since we were all in Pat together, I guess."
"Really?"

Credit Press With Success of Liquor Reforms
STANFORD (UP) — Three state officials have credited California newspapers for public acceptance and support of state liquor control reforms at the 16th annual editors conference of the California News-paper Publishers Association.
Yesterday State Sen Arthur Breed, Assemblyman Caspar W. Weinberger, and Paul R. Leake of the Board of Equalization, credited newspaper publicity for statewide interest in liquor reform.
The three, Board of Equalization attorney Hugh J. Strachan, and Ferdinand Mendenhall, as moderator, met in a panel session to discuss "What is the Liquor Control Problem in California."
Praise Proposed Amendment
Weinberger, San Francisco assemblyman, thanked the editors for their cooperation, and Breed, Alameda County senator, predicted passage of the Breed-Weinberger Constitutional amendment on the November ballot.
The amendment would create an Acobolic Beverage Control Board, appointed by the governor to administer liquor sales and issue liquor licenses in the state—both present functions of the Equalization Board.
Earlier, Jack Craemer, managing editor of the San Rafael Independent Journal, said the Brown Law is "working very well." The law, passed by last session of the Legislature and authored by Assemblyman Ralph Brown of Modesto, requires advance notice of all kinds of local government meetings.
Seeks News Initiative
Craemer headed a panel speaking on "The News of News suppression," which included George Grimes, publisher of the Oxnard Press-Courier and State Senator George Miller, Jr., (D-Martinez).
Grimes urged that newspapers not rely on laws such as the Brown law, but use their own initiative to "make certain of wider and wider accessibility to government records and meetings."
Wallace Lomoe of the Milwaukee Journal, concluded yesterday's session with "The Milwaukee Journal Story." The two-day conference ends today with round-table discussions and workshop meetings.

Joan leaned forward across the table, looking eagerly from Pamela's face to Tom's. "What's this all about? You've dodged as long as you're going to be allowed to. Just what are you two celebrating? It's not your wedding anniversary. That's in April. Come! Give!"
"Well—" Pam began, and then turned to Tom. "You'd better do the talking, Tom. It's your business, not mine."
Tom's square face above his broad shoulders took on an expression of pleased triumph.
"What we're celebrating is the fact that I've got a job. At least," he corrected himself, "I'm on the track of one and I think it's in the bag."
"Oh, Tom! You know it is!"
"No, I don't know yet, Pam. Not for certain." He faced Todd.
"I'm suppose you might call it on probation for a few months. At the end of that time I'll be sure one way or the other."
"What's the job?" Todd asked.
"It's down in Washington."
"Oh!"
There was a short waiting silence. Then Todd said, "I hear there are quite a number of opportunities down there—if you have the right connections," he added, grinning.
"Connections have nothing to do with this."
you have for languages, the better, I gather. Finally, I am an American citizen, born here." He stopped.
"I have you had an interview yet?" Todd asked.
Tom nodded. "Several. And a battery of tests, too. Then I waited. I waited three weeks and months. But finally my call came through."
Joan could not restrain herself any longer. "But what is it? What will you actually do?"
"I don't know, Jo. And I won't know till I'm really in there. Maybe I'll just be a translator, at first. I hope, I'll eventually be connected with foreign affairs. The thing is, the FBI has to investigate me before I'm allowed to do any real work—which is all to the good, I think. Everybody ought to be investigated who works for Uncle Sam. Meanwhile, during that waiting, I'm to go through a training period. When everything's checked and okayed, I can be sure I'm in."
"He's in, all right," Pam said confidently. "That's why we're celebrating. If we had a murky past or any questionable affiliations, we might not be so sure. We're absolutely in the clear, though, so—" She smiled around at them all. "Here's to us!"
"You bet!" Todd said. "It certainly sounds good."

Meet Pamela and Tom at hotel and from there the four men went to a roof garden there was a lovely breeze, a bus dinner, a good floor show smooth orchestra for dance-been ages since we've done thing as frivolous as this," said to Pamela. "It's the first since we were all in Paris for a guess."
What's the job?" Todd asked.
"It's down in Washington."
"Oh!"
There was a short waiting silence. Then Todd said, "I hear there are quite a number of opportunities down there—if you have the right connections," he added, grinning.
"Connections have nothing to do with this."
"No? Not politics, then?"
"Heavens, no!"
"I bet it's the diplomatic service!" Joan exclaimed. "Are we supposed to guess, Tom?"
"Oh, tell them, Tom!" Pamela said.
Tom gave them all that pleased smile again. Then he said, "Well, you know, I wasn't sure just what I wanted to do when I got back here from Europe. I felt completely out of touch with things after two years abroad. All I knew was what I didn't want. Not any more study. Not any more degrees. And not business, either. I wasn't about teaching. It seemed the only possibility for a while but I wasn't too keen. And after you told me of your experiences, Todd, I didn't push it too hard."
He paused.
"I did give the teachers' agencies a brief twirl, though, just to leave no stone unturned. But I was too late. Besides, they told me art teachers come a dime a dozen and that's all I could offer, since I'm not a fullfledged architect by any stretch of the imagination. I was way out on a limb, all right. Not that there was anything pushing me too hard. Pam's folks have been fine. But a man can't live on charity forever."
"Not charity. Love," Pam told him.
"Call it what you will. There comes an end. So through a friend I heard about this opportunity in the State department in Washington. I was given to understand that my travel abroad was the kind of background that was wanted—that and the fact that I had a college degree plus my Master's and that I had learned to speak French quite decently and a little German. The more facility during that waiting, I'm to go through a training period. When everything's checked and okayed, then I can be sure I'm in."
"He's in, all right," Pam said confidently. "That's why we're celebrating. If we had a murky past or any questionable affiliations, we might not be so sure. We're absolutely in the clear, though, so—" She smiled around at them all. "Here's to us!"
"You bet!!" Todd said. "It certainly sounds good."
"I think it's going to be just my meat," Tom said. "There's a real possibility that I may get overseas again in that department, too. If I do—" He looked at Pamela. "I guess we can take it, can't we, Pam?"
"I should say so! It's a funny thing." Pam turned to Joan. "We were so glad to get back here—but now we're all ready to go over again."
"You'd certainly be lucky." Joan nodded at both of them. "Going to Europe once more is a little dream we cuddle back in our subconscious, isn't it, Todd? But imagine if we really could!"
"Tm trying to," he said slowly.
"And that isn't all or even the best of it." Pam's face was alight. "There's the pay. It's better than anything Tom could expect in either teaching or the business world. It's—well, shall I call it adequate, Tom?"
"That covers it. At least Pam won't have to be anybody's secretary, unless she gets bored with housework and wants to. Yes, I'd say my salary was completely adequate. Completely respectable."
"Respectable," Todd repeated. Then he clapped a hand on Tom's shoulder. "Congratulations, old man. I'm certainly glad for you. It all sounds swell."
"We're going down to hunt for an apartment tomorrow," Pam said.
"Don't forget to send us a card from the capital!"
All the way home that night Todd was very quiet and when Joan asked him what he was thinking about, he replied briefly, "Tom's respectable salary."
Was he a trifle bitter? Joan was not sure. Anyway, what could she answer to that?
