Philpott Expected To Star For South All-Stars in Shrine High Grid Classic Southern California's smallest geographical division, Orange County, will have two big representatives in the North-South game July 21 and down in the orange belt the contend Anaheim's Dean Philpott and Fullerton's George Barrera are two of the best ever to seit up for the Shrine's football classic. Philpott was listed at six feet and 180 pounds on Anaheim's official roster although many opponents swear the All-Southern CIF fullback hit and defended like a 200-pounder. Barrera is a squat, five-nine, 210 pound guard with piano legs who also was a first team selection in the Southern Section. He was Fullerton's No. 1 boy, and guards are not renowned for gaining press notices. Anaheim's best all-purpose back since Jerry Shipke of UCLA and pro fame, Philpott was "all everything" on a team which rolled through the tough little Sunset league undefeated, knock mighty SPORTS City Juvenile Loop Friday AA LEAGUE Williams Sporting Goods 200 00—2 Carl's Drive In 200 5x—7 J. San Diego out of the Southern California play-offs and then tied Santa Monica in the semi-finals after spotting the Vikings two quick TDs. Santa Monica made one more first down (15-14) so qualified for the championship finals and easy conquest of Whittier. Like all good fullbacks, Philpott has early speed and drive, and an ability to stay on his feet when hit. In Anaheim wind-sprints, the Dean could stay with the scatbacks for 25 yards. Santa Monica will attest to his driving power; he carried three Vikings over the goal on his back on a five yard touchdown smash. Philpott scored 10 touchdowns for Anaheim; won the Colonist's most valuable and "inspirational" awards; backed up the line; ran the ends as well as up the middle; did the kicking; averaged 6.4 yards a carry throughout the 1953 campaign. Of course he was a "both ways" player. Fullerton's Barrera won letters for three years and twice made All-Sunset league. He captained the Indians (coached by former Richmonder Joe Merlo) and received the squad's most valuable award. Merlo says no opposing lineman outplayed him, and it is noteworthy that in the pivotal Fullerton-Anaheim combat the big Indian line came as close as any to containing Philpott. Barrera is expected to register at Fullerton Junior College. A LEAGUE Fleetwood Trailers ... 111 1—4 Taylor Lumber ... 101 1—3 McCandless and Merrill; Gilliam and Adams.
