Former Head of County Highways Hunting Specimens in Australia How does it feel to roam the great plains of New South Wales—south-east Australia, hunting specimens for a museum? This was answered in part by the man who has such a commission—John B. Davidson, retired superintendent of Orange county highways who is currently in Australia for the Los Angeles Museum, obtaining specimens of wild life for preservation. Davidson, an ardent hunter and woodsman, is reliving the days of his youth when he ventured afar into the hinterlands of the inland continent of Australia on hunting and wild-life expeditions. Although his home is in Corona del Mar, lure of the bush country inland from Sidney and Bathurst brought Davidson on the quest of wildlife through the request of Ken Steager, curator of the world-famed museum who is following Davidson to Australia for the purpose of preparing specimens for taxidermy. Armed with highpowered rifles, special food and water canteens, cameras and camping equipment, Davidson single-handedly heads out into the bush country in his specially-constructed "jeep" station wagon, designed for cross-country travel. Recently, close friends in Yorba Linda, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Speckman, received details of the current expedition of their friend of many years. In the letter, dated May 16, "out in the bush," Davidson recounts in graphic detail his thrilling adventures, far from civilization. How the great "boomer" kangaroos and their mates know as the "Blue Flyers," roam around his campsite each night; how his lonely vigil for animals is broken by the sounds of feeding animals close by, is related in the letter. A similarity to California weather was mentioned by the explorer when he told the warm days and cold nights on the great Australian plain. "There is no water in this camp," Davidson wrote, "'I had to bring enough with me to last. When it gets low, I simply return to some ranch or town and get more. You can drive the Land Rover anywhere here without benefit of roads. In fact the country is smoother to drive over than some of t h e roads." When the letter to his friends, the Speckman's was written, Davidson was some 120 miles north of a small settlement called Broken Hill. Looking forward to the future of the continent—Davidson wrote, "When I came up here I noted that I drove for one full day and part of the next morning before seeing another car or house. It is a vast empty land, but the soil is rich, the few ranches I have seen are able to grow anything they put in the ground. All it needs is water. The great Darling River flows right through the middle of it. Some day they will put the river to work and this will be a rich land indeed." Many of Davidson's trophies are bagged with a .22 caliber Hornet, he revealed. After temporarily preserving the animals they will be turned over to Steager for permanent preservation. Davidson will remain in Australia for the next year, then moving to Africa and the Congo; to India and Indonesia and return to Australia. From there, he plans a tour of New Zealand in search of further specimens and to do personal hunting and fishing, before he returns to Southern California. BROADWAY (Opposite Postoffice) Supervisors Okay County Highway Building Plan SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Orange County Board of Supervisors yesterday went on record as approving recommendations on state highways in Orange County as submitted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce. County Road Commissioner Harold Sprenger presented the program to the supervisors, utilizing a huge map on the wall of the court house meeting room. Sprenger pointed out the requests to the State Engineering department won't necessarily be in order listed by the Associated Chambers. It was explained the chamber has felt to much emphasis and money have been diverted to freeways — thus overlooking jammed secondary highways. Recommendations were the following: Santa Ana Freeway — Continuation of construction of roadway and structure to the San Diego County line. Imperial Highway, State Route 176 — Continuation of construction. Orangethorpe Avenue, State Route 175 — Continuation of construction on relocated route, Acacia street to Los Angeles County line. Newport Ave.-Tustin Avenue, State Route 43 — Continue right of way purchase and construction, Olive to Costa Mesa, including relocated portion. Garden Grove Boulevard, State Route 179 — Immediate improvement to a 4 lane highway from Los Angeles-Orange County line to Santa Ana freeway. Recent traffic count indicates that this improvement is not only warranted, but overdue. Sepulveda Freeway, State Route 151 — Surveys, acquisition of rights of way and construction. The Planning Commission had ruled, 4-3, to deny the Booth request. Board of Supervisors yesterday, on the motion of Ralph J. McFadden of Placentia, decided to take a week to investigate the situation. Board set 9:30 a.m. June 29 as the date for decision. With 75th District Assemblyman LeRoy Lyon and 23 signed petitions on one side of the fence, and approximately 40 property owners on the other, a red-hot hassle has developed. Lyon contends it is a unique and special request, the granting of the variance for business in an A-1 district. He also points to the fact property values would be increased and there would be no danger to health and safety in the neighborhood. Other residents in the new tract claim they bought property on the assumption the area was strictly residential. Subdividers had used the garage in which the proposed beauty salon would be located as a sales office. Lyon explained business is being carried on at three corners on the intersection. Residents Tony Sabo and James Stumpf declared the establishment of the salon would cause increased traffic in the alley at the rear of the house. 37 of which use the alley as their only means of entry by car. Stumpf said kid bike riders would be endangered by drivers who didn't know the area. Door Firm Okayed Over the protest of La Habra's Planning Commission the Orange County Board of Supervisors yesterday approved the request of Best Plywood and Door Company request on the basis the land lies in M-1; light manufacture, but soon will be changed to C-3, Commercial, if annexed to the city. The company's request was granted with the provision it construct a drainage culvert to meet the requirements of the flood control engineer and paint no signs on west side of the building. Tietz Construction Company's request for variances to allow erection of nine single family dwellings with attached garages in front and rear yards on southwest corner of Orangewood avenue and Brookhurst street North Garden Grove, was okayed. It's an R-1 district. To Buy Water Orange County Board of Supervisors has instructed the Flood Control Engineer's office to work out details connected with the purchase of 25,000 acre feet of Metropolitan Water District water, starting July 1. Orange County Municipal Water District has advised supervisors it intends to buy 5000 acre feet shortly after July 1 at the rate of 300 feet per day. A total of $250,000 has been added to the County Flood Control budget to purchase MWD's Colorado River water to replenish sinking water levels throughout the county.
