French Repulse Assault On Coastal Base
(Continued from page 1)
artillery have killed 116 of the enemy, captured 28, and arrested 130 villagers suspected of aiding the rebels.
Van Coc, only 15 miles northwest of Hanoi, is a long, fish-shaped piece of land on the south side of the main Red River channel.
The French action came as Salgon reported the first major escape of rebel prisoners from a French Union stockade in a year.
Military sources said 400 prisoners fought their way out of a camp near Mytho, about 30 miles southwest of Saigon, with the aid of fierce attacks by guerrillas outside the camp.
About 100 prisoners were slain, wounded or recaptured, but the remainder escaped. The stockade holds about 1500 prisoners.
