Pharaoh’s Casket Termed Rare Prize In Archaeology By GERALD ARATHOON United Press Staff Correspondent SAKKARA, Egypt (UP) — The casket of the unknown pharaoh who ruled Egypt 5000 years ago is the dazzling prize of the most important archaeological discovery of recent years. I walked 192 steps from the entrance of the unfinished step pyramid down a steep and musty gallery to reach the harrow, low doorway which leads into the long dead king’s burial chamber. I bent double to get through the doorway and then stood up to find myself in a spacious mortuary hall 130 feet under the earth’s surface. My eyes were immediately riveted on the gleaming sarcophagus possibly, the crown jewels of the which contained the body and ancient past. The shining alabaster masterpiece lay low in the center of the chamber, contrasting with the uneven brown rock into which the room was cut. It was a dazzling and awe-inspiring scene. Beside the caket stood Dr. Zakaria Ghoneim, the archaeologist who made the find, proudly exhibiting the greatest ancient Egyptian relic discovered intact since the tomb of Tutankhamen was opened in 1922. There seemed to be little change since the burial chamber was sealed some 50 centuries ago. I ran my finger down the front side of a sarcophagus, along the smooth vertical sliding pan which was closed when the kingummy and his royal appurtenances were put inside. The ashes of ancient flowers burned during the burial rite of 5000 years ago still lay in a shape atop the sarcophagus. When I walked to the rear side of the casket, I noticed that it lasted and partly sunk in the ground. Ghoneim explained this situation. The casket, he said, weighed several tons, and the tilting was a strong clue that the royal sarcophagus had not been robbed after the king’s burial. “The ground has given way under the weight of the sarcophagus on this site.” Ghoneim explained “because the royal crowns, and other gold and jewels used to be placed at the rear end of the coffin.” The king’s burial chamber is designed in perfect symmetry, but is devoid of polishing and decorations fitting a royal tomb. The chamber measured 29 feet in length, 16 in breadth, and 13 in height. Four pillars cut in the rock held up the roof of the chamber but none of the walls carried false tiles which were customary in old E. tian tombs. BOSS FORGOT EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (P.)—Hobile L. Sentence Alhambran For Drunk Driving A 30-day jail term for driving while intoxicated was begun yesterday by Alhambra welder, 41-year-old Marion Edwin Messick who was nabbed by Anaheim police at 1:46 a.m. when the allegedly ran a red signal light. Messick received the sentence in lieu of a $150 fine when he appeared yesterday before Municipal Judge Ronald L. Tiday in court. Mrs. Gertrude Ellen Messick, arrested for drunk-in-car at the same time as her husband's arrest, pleaded guilty with her husband and was fined $25 or five-days in jail. Also appearing in court and pleading guilty to charges of failure to pay the State $775.33 in insurance deductions for employees was Wallace Fisher, doing business as the 20th Century Machine Tool Repair Co. of Placentia. He was fined six months in the county jail by Judge Tiday but was given probation provided he reimburse the State for its loss. Riverside Driver Admits Drunk Driving Counts A jail term of 30 days was begun today by Jack William McEvoy of Riverside who pleaded guilty yesterday in Anaheim -Fullerton Municipal court to a charge of drunk driving. The count was brought by Fullerton police who alleged that McEvoy broke the law in their city June 11. His driving privileges were suspended for the next 90 days on order of Judge Ronald L Tiday of the court. Indian Delegate At Geneva Now Sadder But Wiser By CHARLES M. MCCANN The shadow man of the Geneva conference has left for the United States, sadder but wiser. V.K. Krishna Menon, sometimes called "the patient peacemaker," went to Geneva as Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's personal representative. He hoped to bridge the gulf between the Communists and the free world in the negotiations on Indochina. He did not succeed—but he learned a lot about the way Communists do business. Krishna Menon warned the Russians privately at Geneva that they would lose support among East Asian neutrals if they did not agree to a group consisting entirely Asian delegates to supervise an armistice in Indochina. The Communists did not agree. They want any supervisory group to contain at least 50 per cent Reds so that it can do nothing to prevent cheating, and so that the Reds will have a built-in veto power. Bitter Against Reds Krishna Menon left Geneva, after three fruitless weeks, somewhat bitter against the Soviet Russian and Chinese Communist delegations. Advices from the conference say he thinks the Reds deceived him by pretending they would compromise on means to control an armistice. He also believes the Reds asked too much in their attempt to take over parts of the Indochina Associated States of Laos and Cambodia, where the rebels have only scattered guerrilla forces. He also believes the Reds asked too much in their attempt to take over parts of the Indochina Associated States of Laos and Cambodia, where the rebels have only scattered guerrilla forces. But Krishna Menon distributes his blame. He criticizes the United States for not recognizing Red China and criticizes France for not giving Indochina complete independence. United States officials hope that Nehru and Krishna Menon will now be less inclined to believe in the possibility of Communist good faith. Krishna Menon has become internationally known as a foreign policy adviser to Nehru. He won a notable success as the author of the plan which broke the West-East deadlock on the disposition of Korean War prisoners who did not want to be sent home. Krishna Menon is 57. He is small in stature with the features of an intellectual. He has a remarkably bushy, unruly head of whitish-gray hair that makes him 'stand out in a crowd. He thinks so fast that he sometimes stammers in his speeches. His brain gets ahead of his tongue. A follower of the late Mohandas K. Gandhi, he neither smokes nor drinks. His strict vegetarianism makes him a problem at banquets. Krishna Menon went to college in England, and has lived in London most of the time since 1924. He practices law there. He ran unsuccessfully for the House of Commons several times as a Labor Party candidate. He was made Indian high commissioner in London in 1947. As Nehru's adviser, he is India's No. 1 diplomat. He is now going to United Nations headquarters in New York. When he is there, he serves as the real head of the Indian delegation. WELL HATTED BRIMFIELD, Mass.
