SPORTS BOB ZIMMER. Editor Elks Stay in Lead With 4-0 Triumph Over TVers Anaheim's Elks kept their half-game grip on first place by blanking Ballman's TVers, 4-0, but the second-place P & L Transmissions stayed right on their heels by waxing Hall's Drive-In, 11-1, in City A League action last night. In the third game on the card, the Teamsters nipped the winless Magnolia Cobras, 2-1. The Elks jumped the TVers for three runs in the first inning and breezed to their victory behind the two-hit pitching of Ralph Sutliff, who also whiffed 11 hitters. The Transmissions allied a pair of runs in the first without a hit, added three in the second and iceed the game with a five-run, five-hit outbreak in the fourth. Herb Hamilton collected two hits for the victors as Art Altheide tossed a three-hitter. Johnny Fouch fired a four-hitter for the Teamsters, who came from behind with a pair of runs in the last of the seventh on a walk, a double by Gil Bristow and a single by Louis Armendariz. Bids ranged from $579,400 to $595,000 compared with the estimated cost of $538,392.Board Chairman Lloyd A.Riutcel commented that the trustees had expected the bids to run below the estimated cost. Marciano Expected to Give Chance Shot at Crown in Santo In Weekend Series With Buena Park Anaheim's Junior Legionnaires will be out to grab a share of first place in the Orange County League (Northern Division) when they entertain Buena Park in a two-game series at La Palma Park tomorrow and Sunday. Both games are slated to start at 2 p.m. If the locals take two from Buena Park as expected, they will be deadlocked for first place with Fullerton in the final standings and a special playoff game will be held next week to determine which club will face the Southern Division champion in the county playoffs next weekend. Fullerton drubbed Buena Park twice last weekend, 19-3 and 10-2. In the opening series of the season, Anaheim split with Fullerton, winning 11-5, and losing 11-3. Catcher Frank Doretti is showing the way at the plate for Dave Hernandez' cohorts with 11 hits in 23 at bats in six games, including practice tilt, for a .478 average. Pitcher Paul Grover is batting .375, followed by Shortstop Joe Ayitia and Third-baseman Al Storey, .318 apiece; Outfielder Bill French, .292 and First-baseman Dick Blankmeyer, .286. Grover and Rudy Peralta have both chalked up a pair of mound victories without a loss. Hernandez is expected to use this pair in addition to Paul Morris and Bob Scholz for pitching duty against Buena Park. Dave Stephenson, star right-hander of the squad, will not be available for slab duty until next weekend because he is attending Boys' State in Sacramento. The rest of the lineup will probably include Doretti behind the plate, Blankmeyer at first, Al Moody at second, Ayitia at short-stop, Storey at third and French, Verne Weaver and Mickey Flynn in the outfield. Marciano Expected to Give Chance Another Shot at Crown in September NEW YORK (UP)—Rocky Marciano's next heavyweight title defense probably will be a September return bout with lion-hearted Ezzard Charles, who threatened for a while Thursday night to recapture the crown before 47.585 in Yankee Stadium. Marciano wound up with the unanimous 15-round decision after a thrilling battle. Manager Al Weill said today, "Charles will be our first choice if Rocky's eye heals in time for the fight." The unbeaten champion, who made his third successful defense and achieved his 46th straight professional victory, suffered the re-opening of an old gash brow in the fourth round.
