Claim Egypt Is Losing Influence In Middle East
Egypt is steadily losing its influence in the Middle East, and it is becoming increasingly isolated.
For a time, Egypt was making a strong bid for leadership of the Moslem world in general and the Araby world in particular.
But Moslem leadership is hifting toward Turkey and the Aate membe of the Arb League are drawing away from Egypt.
Also, Egypt is being by-passed in the organization of the eastern end of the Allied defense line against Soviet Russian aggression.
The United States has made defense agreements with Turkey and Pakistan and is supplying them with arms. It has agreed to send arms to Iraq and may soon agree to send arms to Syria and Lebanon.
Egypt is getting no arms. Economic aid earmarked for it is being held up because of the British-Egyptian dispute over the Suez Canal.
The Egyptian army got rid of King Farouk and its more radical members talk of throwing the British out of the canal zone by force is necessary.
But Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser and his fellow army officers who are running the country are beset by a continuing internal crisis, which helps to lessen Egypt's influence.
There are disputes about leadership. Army officers who helped oust Farouk are being accused of plotting to overthrow the government of Nasser and President Mohammed Naguib. Newspaper editors are being thrown into jail and their papers suppressed.
A settlement of the canal dispute might help to restore Egypt's position, and might in time bring Egypt into the grand alliance against Communist aggression.
Britain broke off the latest Suez Canal negotiations because of a new outbreak of terrorism in the zone, including the murder of British soldiers.
Talks May Resume
It is reported that negotiations may be resumed within the next few weeks, partly because of United States pressure on Britain.
It is accepted that under any agreement, Britain will withdraw its garrison of 80,000 troops from the zone. But about 4,000 men would remain as technicians to maintain a supply base.
The chief issue is whether the 4,000 technicians should be uniformed army men, as Britain demands, or civilians as Egypt insists. Thus, Britain and Egypt do not seem too far apart.
In the past, every time agreement seemed near something happened to wreck it. It may be that the next attempt at negotiation will succeed, with United States help. In that event, the canal zone might one day become a most valuable Allied base with Egypt as one of the allies.
But Egypt's unlikely soon to regain its position in the Middle East."
Frustrated Reds Torture Resident Of Chinese Isles
TACHEN ISLAND (UP) heavy board washed sluggishly ward the shore of Tachen Island off the Red-held China Mainland.
A couple of men waded out the surf and fished it in.
Tied to the board with old was the body of a young girl. Teeth had been smashed in her body had been cruelly mutilated.
She had floated in with the from a neighboring island held the Chinese Communists. She had tortured her until she dying. Then they had tied her to the board and set her adrift float here with the tide. She could not give. None of the times had been shot. All drowned after being tortured.
10 Miles Away
I saw this girl buried. I photographs of other bodies who had been washed ashore. There were bodies of men, women children.
The Reds have moved in three islands about 10 miles from Tachen.
Apparently the Reds thou mistakenly, that Nationalist troop had been on the three islands had used their people as intelligence agents. The Nationalists lieve the Reds tortured the islanders in their fury at failing to find information they wanted, formation which the island could not give. None of the times had been shot. All drowned after being tortured.

new this girl buried. I saw graphs of other bodies which been washed ashore. There bodies of men, women and men.
Reds have moved in on islands about 10 miles from currently the Reds thought, ently that Nationalist troops men on the three islands or used their people as intelligence agents. The Nationalists believe Reds tortured the island-their fury at failing to get information they wanted, invasion which the islanders not give. None of the vice-had been shot. All had had after being tortured.
books as if the Reds may attack Tachen in full force soon. Aside from putting troops on the three nearby islands, they are reported to be concentrating MIG fighter and jet bomber planes at Ninghsien, about 100 miles from Tachen and intelligence agents report they are assembling landing craft along the coast.
Tachen is a valuable base, only 16 miles off the coast, and it is a constant reminder that Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's program is "return to the mainland."
Tachen is only 20 square miles in area. But from it the Nationalists dominate the approaches to the Red-held port of Haimen.
Warships working out of Tachen make life miserable for Red shipping all along the Chekiang Province coast.
Fertified Outpost
If the Reds come they will get a surprise. American as well as Nationalist officers who have visited Tachen believe the Reds would have to pay a fearful price to take it.
"I hope they come," Gen Liu Lien-yi, the Tachen garrison commander said to me. "My people are ready. We want to kill some Communists."
Liu has the stuff to back up his tough talk. His machine guns cover every inch of the rocky coast and the barren hills which rise almost vertically from the sea.
Heavy guns and monster mortars are zeroed on every possible approach.
Crack regular troops have bored concrete-reinforced caves deep into the mountinsides as protection against naval and aerial bombardment.
"This would be a tough nut for the U. S. Marines to crack," an American advisory officer said. "The Reds talk big, but they aren't Marines."
