WINNERS DECLARED—The first, second and third place winners of the Hurst Jewelry Store Diamond contest were decided Monday at 2 p.m. when City Councilman, A. J. Schutte, reached into the contest box and pulled out the three winning entry blanks. The contest was sponsored by Hurst Jewelry to "stimulate interest in the beauty and romance of diamonds." Schutte, left, is pictured showing the three winning tickets to Joe Hurst, right, owner, of the jewelry store. Winner of the $150 diamond ring first prize is Harold D. Miller, 410 Boyson Ave.; second winner of a $100 diamond ring is Mrs. John L. Walts, 121 East Broadway, and winner of the third prize, a $75 diamond ring is Mrs. J. H. Danley, 10011 Midwood Lane all of Anaheim. The correct answer to the contest was 139 diamonds. There were 138 pictured on a black background, which was diamond shaped and therefore counted as one. Fourth and fifth prize winners will be notified in a few days. (Bulletin photo) Elks Convention Slated in L., A. Special religious services will be held on Sunday at the First Methodist Church of Los Angeles at 11 a.m. and at St. Vibiana's Cathedral at 10:45 a.m. for the Roman Catholics with His Emfluence, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre presiding over the high Mass. James, the Grand Exalted Ruler. One of the highlights of the conclave will be a "Cavalcade of Elkdom," presented at Hollywood Bowl under the direction of Artistry, Unlimited. Social events will include a Mardi Gras and street dance Saturday night, special sightseeing tours with the Elks Hospitality cars visits to radio and television shows, fashion shows for the women, tour of the "Farmer's Market" and Knott's Berry Farm, as well as the Sunset Strip restaurants, Harbor tour and visits to the South Coast beach areas, trip to Cigaret Sales Drop 4½ Per Cent WASHINGTON (UP)—The Agriculture Department has estimated that cigarette sales dropped 4½ per cent this year. It said it does not know if fears of lung cancer had anything to do with the decline. The department estimated Americans will smoke a total of 416 billion cigarettes in the fiscal year that ends the last of this month. It said "it may be" that smokers who switch to king size brands, which contain about 17 per cent more tobacco than regular sizes, smoke slightly fewer cigarets daily. The estimate and observations were made Wednesday night in a report on the tobacco situation by the Agricultural Marketing Service. They were based on factory tax stamp removals for the fiscal year ending June 30. "Some observers suggest that the considerable publicity given to the effects of cigarets on health has been a factor in the decline in cigaret consumption in the past year," the report said. "No government survey data exists as to whether any cigarette smokers have stopped smoking or reduced their consumption or whether potential new smokers have abstained because of such publicity." The department referred to recent scientific reports that there may be some connection between heavy cigaret smoking and the incidence of lung cancer. The new Grand Exalted ruler and his officers will be elected on Monday and formal installation of these officers will be made on Thursday morning. July 8. Rotary Club Views Film on Fishing A thrilling story of trout fishing was brought to the Rotary Club during their meeting; Monday with the presentation of a colored motion picture titled, "Fishing in Alsaka." Photographed in glorious color, the film showed the excellent fish that can be had in Alaskan rivers where the virgin waters are not trampled by hundreds of fishermen and the trout are fat and full of fight from feeding on salmon eggs. Prior to the movie, Arval Morris reminded the Rotarians of the school bond election Wednesday, and urged them to vote in this important election. He said that the $1,600,000 bond issue is needed to construct badly needed classrooms for our children and that a two-thirds majority is required for the bonds to pass. Bulletin Want Ads Bring Results Predict Wheat Crop Will Match Last Year's WASHINGTON (UP)—The Agriculture Department estimated today that farmers will produce a 999,561,000 bushel wheat crop this year, close to last year's output despite drought and federal acreage controls. A crop as big as today's forecast would add to current record high grain surpluses by more than filling expected export and domestic demand for about 900 million bushels this season. Big yields on about 15 million fewer acres than last year are behind continued large production prospects. Today's estimate, based on June 1 crop conditions, was made up of 739,917,000 bushels of winter wheat and 259,644,000 buhels of spring-planted wheat. Last month a 707,118,000 bushel winter wheat crop was forecast. The spring wheat estimate is the first official one this year, although farmers planting intentions indicated in March a 225-million bushel spring crop in prospect. Last year, farmers turned out 1,168,536,000 bushels of wheat, 877,511,000 bushels of winter wheat and 291,025,000 bushels of spring. The average crop during 1943-52 was 1,121,506,000 bushels, made up of 832,977,000 bushels of winter and 288,529,000 bushels of spring wheat.
