Schmitt, former Anaheim High School track and basketball star, left by plane this morning for Ann Arbor, Mich., where he will compete for the Occidental College track squad in the NCAA track and field championships this weekend.
Following the NCAA meet, Schmitt will fly to St. Louis to compete for the Los Angeles Athletic Club in the AAU championships.
Schmitt, whose heat clocking of 47.6 in the 440 ranks fifth in the nation, recently captured the Southern California Intercollegiate Conference title while setting a new conference record of 48.4s.
Schmitt has improved his time steadily since competing for Anaheim High. His high school coach, Sam Keith, has attributed this to his "sheer determination, rather than natural ability."
Schmitt's chief rival at Ann Arbor will be Jim Lea of SC, whose time of 47s. is the best in the nation. Other outstanding quarter-mile aces include Jill Jones of Manhattan, 47.3s; Bob Rogers of Morgan, 47.4s.; and Dick Colbroth of Columbia, 47.8s.

UC Relaxes Rules on Frosh Sports
LANE — Faculty represes of the nine Pacific conference schools faced a agenda today as they pre-wo wind up their four-day meeting.
Directors relaxed some results on freshmen games and in a record number of 35 violations of conference member schools yesterer action, Henry Red) of UCLA was pamed prestioning the Coaches Association
Lynn (Pappy) Waldorf University of California.
Conference also set the opfer fall football practice for annually to confirm to rules. The PCC previously practice to begin 18 days the first game of the seas-is year, the Sept. 1 date will cut twodays off the previous practice time.
The directors revised two rules affecting freshmen sports. One would allow three fresh football games per season instead of two and the other would allow 15 freshman basketball games a season instead of 10.
In disciplinary cases, conference spokesman H. P. (Dick) Everest of the University of Washington said the violations "ran the gam-ut from mild to very serious."
Records were closed on 22 of the 35 cases, three were referred back to the schools for disciplinary action, two wer ereported back with a reprimand, seven were reported back for clarification and one was reported to the commissioner's office for investigation.
No fines were levied and details of the violations were not released.

SAN FRANCISCO (UP) — It'll be the Hollywood Stars against the cream of the Coast League June 21 in the movie city.
The high-flying Twinks knocked over Los Angeles, 7-1, last night, thus assuring themselves of being in first place next Monday. That's the requisite for the host team in this year's renewal of the PCL all-star game. The win coupled with San Francisco's 6-1 loss to Oakland put the Stars 6½ games out in front with five games left to play before Monday.

this eighth win for the Stars.
Wild Eighth
Hollywood's second run came on the sixth on a home run by Tom Saffell and that was enough of a margin for the former Cardinal pitcher. But the Stars pushed over five more in a wild eighth inning in which the crucial play was a muffed grounder by Bob Spicer. Spicer is a pitcher out Angel manager Bill Sweeney but him in at second base after Gene Mauch was thumbed out of the game.
Elsewhere in the PCL, Portland home runs were the big factor in the Beavers' 11-0 and 3-2 twin win over Seattle which dropped the Rainiers from third to a tie with San Diego for fourth; and tiny lefthander Artie Schalock mystified San Francisco batsmen with his left-handed curves to give the Oakland Oaks a 6-1 victory.
San Diego at Sacramento was rained out.
Portland pitcher Glenn Elliott held the Rainiers to three hits in the seven innings opener while hismates got him a six-run cushion in the second inning. Fletcher Robbe hit a home run with two aboard in the big second and Walt Judnich got one with the bases empty in the same inning. Granny Gladstone hit one out of the park in the next inning.
More Homers
Gladstone hit his second homer of the evening in the sixth inning of the nightcap to give pitcher Bill Boemler his third win against four losses. Clarence Maddern accounted for both Seattle runs in the third with his fifth homer of the season.
Schallock struck out 10 Seal batsmen to gain his sixth win against a single defeat. It was Oakland's second straight win over the Seals who until this week were the hottest team in the league.
Gene Hermanski got Oakland's first run in the second when he hammered one of Ken Holcombe's offerings into the right field bleachers at Seals Stadium. The Oaks added the clincher in the fifth when Russ Rose scored on Jim Marshall's sacrifice fly and pushed over four more for good measure in the seventh on five walks, a single by rose and a double by Marshall.
