Bringing good long distance service to those in uniform while they're away from home is the job of telephone people in many military centers today. At Army Camps, Naval Stations, and Air Force Bases in the West, some 2,000 public telephones are at work so that servicemen can call where they want, when they want. Providing these facilities is an important part of our overall planning. For we want to make sure that people in the Armed Forces—as well as those at home—enjoy the best possible service at the lowest possible cost. Pacific Telephone works to make your telephone a bigger value every day. Proposed FJC Gym Nears Realization When bids on construction of the Fullerton Junior College gymnasium are returned by the June 15 deadline, he addition to the college facility will be a step nearer realization. Specifications: The gymnasium have been reeled said Logan W. Wheatley assistant to the superintendent with several alternate plans for consideration by contractors who bid. "When completed the new gymnasium will be among the most modern in the Southland" he said "as far as lighting ventilation spectator accommodations and other features are concerned." The construction of the basic unit — a main gym and dressing rooms for men and women students — will cost an estimated $500,000 according to Architect William Taylor. An additional $100,000 is to be allowed for furnishings architects' fees and other expenses. Alternate plans submitted to bidders, for a total contract of $600,000 or less, include either of the following in addition to the basic unit: A swimming pool and facilities or a health unit and classroom unit across the front of the building. Among features of the new gymnasium will be a floor of most recent type, allowing a certain "springiness" for basketball and other athletic activities. The floor, to achieve this effect, will rest upon a double set of joists at right angles to one another. Thus the top set of joists springs upon the lower one, while the floor is laid at right angles to the top joists. Southwest News BARBARA KRAMP Phone KE 5-8861 The A. W.
