West County Sets Meet to Form Red Cross Unit
SUN GARDENS — Increasing need for a Red Cross branch in Western Orange County — to establish local responsibility for carrying on the program in the county's fastest growing area was stressed today as preparations were made for an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. June 9 in the Sun Gardens fire hall.
The meeting will form the first West Orange County branch of the Southern Orange County chapter, it was disclosed.
Logan Moore, Garden Grove, is temporary chairman of the organization committee. Rev. Eugene Coffin, pastor Alamitos Friends Church, Garden Grove, heads the nominating committee to recommend a slate of officers and directors to be named at the meeting.
Richard T. Hanna, Westminster, is chairman of the by-laws committee and Dr. Richard W. Heffner, Garden Grove, is chairman of the arrangements committee.
Chapter officials, however, feel that a branch of the chapter is needed to take care of the program in the Western Orange County area.

Jordans Dominate California State Secretary’s Post
SACRAMENTO (UP) No one but a Jordan has been elected secretary of state for the past 44 years and Frank M. Jordan hopes to extend the family's string for another four years in the June primary.
Frank C. Jordan held the office for 30 years and upon his death in 1940, Gov. Culbert L. Olson appointed Paul Peek to the office. Jordan's son, Frank M., the present officeholder, defeated Peek in November 1942 when Peek tried to break the Jordan record of election successes.
Frank M. Jordan has held office ever since, winning both Republican and Democratic nominations in 1946 and 1950 primaries.
Jordan's opponent this time is Daniel Raeburn, Los Angeles newspaper publisher, a Democrat, who says he is "out to end the Jordan dynasty." He is a former union official and a UCLA graduate.
Minor party candidates for Jordan's job include Horace V. Alexander of Los Angeles, an Independent progressive, and Frank G. H. Stevens, a Pasadena minister, unopposed the prohibition party nomination.
Roy E. Simpson, 61, is seeking his third term as superintendent of public instruction, a non-partisan job where party affiliations mean nothing.
Simpson, a veteran educator, was appointed to the post in 1945, won a full four-year term in 1946 and again in 1950: He has the support of almost all the educator groups in the state including the influential California Teachers Association.

L. A. County Sets Up Accident Telephone
LOS ANGELES — Motorists today can call a new emergency telephone number Zenith 12000 in the event of a highway acciden- t anywhere in Los Angeles county.
The call will go to the California Highway Patrol offices, where mobile units can be dispatched to the scene of the accident for immediate aid.
Roy E. Simpson, 61, is seeking his third term as superintendent of public instruction, a non-partisan job where party affiliations mean nothing.
Simpson, a veteran educator, was appointed to the post in 1945, won a full four-year term in 1946 and again in 1950. He has the support of almost all the educator groups in the state including the influential California Teachers Asso- ciation.
His opponents include Dr. Harry C. Steinmetz, a man Simpson fired as a professor at San Diego State College. Steinmetz was dismissed for his refusal to answer questions on whether he was a Communist.
Other candidates for Simpson's job:
David B. Everett of Riverside County who says he wants to stop the "wave of progressive education which is rampant throughout the California school system."
Says Simpson's department has become "big government" and taken powers away from local boards.
Edward L. Alberts of Alhambra 35-year-old professor at Los Angles Metropolitan Junior College. Platform includes a return to teaching fundamentals, Americanism and taking schools away from "professional educators." He also is listed as an opponent of "pre-gressive education pedagogy."
