Al Smith Homers Indians To 8-7 Win Over Yankees The Indians had a "happy warrior" named Al Smith today and the Yankees had an unhappy manager named Casey Stengel. Smith was happy, not because he had the same name as another "happy warrior" who ran for president in 1928, but because he was working for the Cleveland and not the Indianapolis Indians. Stengel was unhappy because his Yankees had just lost the kind of a game they had won almost invariably during his six year regime as manager of the world champions. Cleveland had just defeated the Yankees, 8-7 in 10 innings on the margin of Smith's second homer of the year in the top half of the inning. It was the third straight triumph in Yankee Stadium for the Indians this year and their fourth in six meetings with the champs. Smith, Cleveland's rookie left fielder, was elated not only because he hit the game winning homer but because he had been ticketed for the Cleveland farm club at Indianapolis. Now he is sure to stay, despite the fact the Indians are carrying seven outfielders. Weird Game It was one of the weirdest games the Yankees ever lost. They scored seven runs on six hits in the first inning, then were no-hitted for a regulation nine innings by five pitchers with lefty Hal Newhouser getting credit for his second win by blanking them the last three innings. Larry Doby hit a terrific three-run homer in the third, Cleveland added three more in the fourth and tied it at 7-7 in the ninth on Bob Avila's homer, after which Smith hit his game-winner. Cleveland took a two-run lead over second place Chicago when the White Sox suffered a 5-2 defeat at Boston. Rookie Frank Sullivan gained credit for his second triumph holding Chicago to seven hits before Ellis Kinder came in to save his triumph in the eighth, Jackie Jensen's two-run triple sparked a four-run frist inning Boston rally. Orioles Blast A's In other American League games the Orioles blasted out with a rare 14-hit evening and topped the Athletics 9-1 on Joe Coleman's six-hitter and Washington topped Detroit 7-2 as rookie Dean Stone also tossed a six-hit triumph. It was Coleman's second victory over his old Philly teammates. Clint Courtney hit a three-run Baltimore homer and Bob Kennedy blasted three doubles and a single to pace the winners. Stone, winning his third game without a defeat was backed up Pete Runnels' three-run homer and three singles by Jim Busby, who knocked in two runs. The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Braves, 7-6, at Milwaukee in a wild night game called at the end of five innings because of rain. The Braves scored five runs in the fourth to go ahead, 6-2, chiefly on Eddie Mathews' grand-slam homer, but the Dodgers came back with five in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. The victory put the Dodgers in first place by one game. The Giants were rained out at St. Louis after a half inning in which they led 3-0 and the Pirates were washed out at Chicago. Wednesday's star—Al Smith, the "happy warrior" of the Indians who hit a homer in the 10th for an 8-7 victory over the Yankees. California state titles were named by FJC teams in water polo, basketball, and swimming. Water polo and swimming teams took Southern California championships; and in basketball football, the Hornets copped Western Conference titles. The pigskinners, after breaking in in their first four games, neezed through the six conference lines in championship style to wash with a 6-0 loop record. The Hornet losses were to Pasala and Glendale, both practice tests. Paul Torena and John Crawford, captains and first stringers on league winning eleven, led the team, both being elected to first all-conference positions. Other all-conference players were Jim Alexander, tackle; Calgenberg, fullback; and Jack Twright, right halfback Torena and Hilgenberg were further honored at the end of the season by being named to the first string on All - Southern California team. Coaches for the 'best ever' Hornet football team were Dick Building, head mentor, and Carl Mulleneaux and Bud Dawson, assistants. While there was no recognized state champion in water polo, there was no one at the end of the season who would challenge the locals supremacy in the water. Stockton Junior College won the Northern California title to gain the right to play the Hornets for the state title but an agreement was never reached. The Hornets defeated Compton to annex the Southern California crown. After losing two state championships in the previous pair of seasons, Coach Alex Omalev led his charges through two tournament victories, a perfect league slate and the long - sought California Crown. The team gave an example of things to come in one of their first games when the defeated Muir, 106-68. They won both the Southern Utah tournament and the Chaffey tournaments. They then hit a mild slump in which they suffered their only two losses of the year. The Hornets snapped out of it in fine style to blast the other league teams for a total of 12 consecutive wins. The Omalev men then traveled to Sacramento where they dropped Modesto. Fresno and Grant Tech for the championship. Dave Hall, Dan Rogers and Jim Sterkel were named to the first string All-State team while Bill Anson and Jack Mount received similar nominations to the second team. Hall was later honored by being named the California Junior College Player of the Year. The swimmers came through in championship style to win the Eastern Conference, the Southern California titles, Jim Stevenson and Bob Foley were consistent first place winners for Coach Jimmy Smith's mermen.
