Private Secretaries Reveal Lives Of Famous Employers on Television
NEW YORK — It behooves famous bosses to be on their good behavior these days. Television has its camera eye on them through their secretaries and other employees.
The staff of "Who's The Boss?", a new Friday night panel show on the ABC network, has collected a lot of interesting information about some of the country's better known employers in preparing the programs.
Mrs. Emily West, secretary to actress Jeannette MacDonald, revealed, for example, that her employer is very superstitious. She won't permit herself to be photographed as she is boarding an airplane for a flight. It's okay when she's debarking after finishing a flight. Miss MacDonald doesn't countenance handing a salt shaker directly to a person at table. It has to be set down in front of the person who wants it.
Gabor Sisters Eat
Harry Putney, a butler employed by the glamorous sisters Gabor, revealed that Eva, Zsa-Zsa and Magda don't bother about diets. So far they have been able to keep their figures without worrying about the hundreds of calories in the rich, heavy Hungarian foods that they like.
Not all of the interesting information actually comes out on the program; it is simply obtained in interviewing those who go on it. The idea of the program is for a panel, guided by Walter Kiernan as master of ceremonies, to guess the identity of the bosses by questioning the employees.
Bosses On Show
Occasionally the bosses themselves appear on the show. These have included Miss MacDonald, Joe Louis and Eddie Fisher.
Mrs. Edith Allen, secretary to U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, revealed that the jurist keeps in his office a collection of the signatures of all of the presidents of the United States and a collection of wildflowers that
with an ambition to design dresses,
a diploma from Mills College and a round trip ticket. Like countless other fathers, J. L. Lafferty hoped his daughter would decide to come back home.
First Job
"My first job was a finisher in a dress factory," she said. "I got the job out of the newspaper. I didn't know how to type, but I had done some work for a dress designer in Dallas, so I thought I could be a finisher. It paid $35 a week."
That job lasted three weeks, long enough to convince Ann that a finisher had to sew faster and better than she could and that she couldn't live on $35 a week.
Learns Typing
She looked for work for two weeks, practiced typing at night, and finally got a $50-a-week job as receptionist in a dress pattern company.
"When they asked me if I could type, I said 'yes,' she recalled with a guilty look. 'I learned a lot on that job. You know, it takes a great deal of tact to be a good receptionist. Besides, you get to know people in all departments in a company. It's a wonderful way to start."
Likely most girls who get started in a job, Ann decided it would be more fun to share an apartment than to live in a room and eat out. So she began the familiar pattern of frequent moving.
Pleased With Herself
"After four moves in two months I moved in with my present roommate," she said. "My share of the rent is $55 a month, and we're both furnishing it."
She walks to work to save car fare, plans to start going to designing classes at night, and is thoroughly pleased with herself because she has made friends she likes and has kept a job she got without asking anyone's help.
Maybe she'll be a successful dress designer some day. At the moment, Ann is only predicting: "It's going to take a lot longer than I had planned."
