Marshal Tito in Greece to Discuss Proposed Yogoslav-Greek-Turk Pact
Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia certainly is an active man.
He has just gone to Greece to discuss the proposed Yugoslav-Greek-Turk military alliance.
He is trying to settle Yugoslavia's bitter dispute with Italy over the Trieste territory. Prospects for a settlement look good.
He is bringing Yugoslavia closer and closer to complete cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization if not actual membership in it.
At the same time he is patching up, to some extent, Yugoslavia's relations with the Iron Curtain countries.
Finally, he has just squashed without the least trouble a threatened revolt in his own Communist Party.
Tito also is a remarkable man.
Led Partisan Movement
Long an outlawed Communist, he assumed the leadership of the Yugoslav partisan movement in World War II. He fought both the Germans and the Italians.
He threw young King Peter off the throne to become his country's first president.
Finally, he is the only Communist leader who ever told the Kremlin to go fly a kite and get away with it.
The 3,667-ton Yugoslav navy training ship in which Tito cruised to Greece — with an escort of four destroyers — dropped anchor at Piraeus, the port for Athens, today.
During a six-day visit Tito will be the guest of King Paul and Premier Field Marshal Alexander Papagos.

During a six-day visit Tito will be the guest of King Paul and Premier Field Marshal Alexander Papagos.
Tito signed a friendship treaty with Greece and Turkey last year. It was a development of great importance in the organization of Western defenses against Soviet Russian aggression.
Defense Alliance
Now the friendship treaty is to be turned into a firm defense alliance.
Italy objects to the defense alliance because of the Trieste dispute. But there seems to be good hope for an early settlement with the help of the United States and Britain.
Tito has come a long way since he was born 62 years ago, the son of a blacksmith. He became a steel worker. He was severely wounded as a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I. Taken prisoner, he fought on the side of the Bolsheviks in the Russian civil war. A Communist, he returned to Yugoslavia to become a union organizer. The Communist Party was outlawed. He served several years in prison, and went underground on his release.
Yugoslav First
He emerged in World War II as a leader of a ragged army of patriots which swelled to a total of 300,000 and fought the Germans and the Italians with brilliant success.
He reached a crisis in his life in 1948. Soviet Russia was trying to bleed Yugoslavia economically and, in foreign policy, make it completely subservient.
Tito rebelled. He revealed himself as a Yugoslav first and a Communist second. The Kremlin

"California's economy is well supported by high levels of consumer spending, residential construction, private investment... and expenditures for national security." Kirkwood said.
He said the per capita rate of income and savings for California citizens is among the highest in the nation.
State revenue increased some 35 million dollars as a result of a 16 million increase in the revenue from the sales tax, a boost of some 10 millions in personal income taxes and increases in bank and corporation tax revenue, insurance companies, inheritance, interest, liquor, part-mutuel and other tax revenues. Kirkwood said.

Labor Party

LYLE C. WILSON
BIGTON (UP)—The leadage British Labor party
accepted an invitation to
China in August and

Attlee; former British
prime minister, and Aneurin Bevan, the leftwing orator from Wales, are principal members of the eight-man delegation. The decision to accept the invitation beyond the Iron Curtain was not an individual matter but an act of policy by the Labor Party Executive body.
Recognized Red China
It was a Labor government with Attlee as prime minister which recognized the Communist government of China in January, 1950. Considerable humiliation for Great Britain flowed from that act. The British sent a diplomatic mission headed by a charge d'affaires to Peiping. Red China has not yet sent a representative to London. Britsih recognition of the Reds was to protect her large investments in China and her possession of rich Hong Kong.
This act of recognition is a matter of basic conflict between British and United States foreign policy. If the British Socialists were returned to office, British foreign policy then would favor admission of Red China to the United Nations. Nothing would suit Communist plans better than for disputes between London and Washington to multiply. The Conservative government now in power stands with the United States at the moment against admission of the Red Chinese.
Labor Party Conference
Basic differences in United States and British Socialist foreign policy were outlined in last year's statement of principles at the Labor Party's annual conference. They probably will be repeated in sub-
stance when the conference this year. The 1953 conference demned the agreement between Spain and the United States and naval bases. The agree was alleged to have inflicted ous moral and political damage on the West. The conference U.N. membership for Red Neutralization of Korea and mosa, delay in re- Germany.
Those propositions represent formal party policy. A consider number of Labor Party voters port a more extreme anti-can position. They are head Bevan who aspires to s Attlee as party leader and timately, to become British minister.

Ike Owes Taxes of One Cent on Property
CHESTERTON, Ind. (UP) — Indiana tax rolls listed President Eisenhower as a delinquent taxpayer today. But Adlai E. Stevenson is in good standing.
The President owes one cent. What's more, he apparently has refused to pay it.
Both Mr. Eisenhower and Stevenson were deeded 1-26th of a square inch of land here when they were opponents in the 1952 presidential campaign.
Mrs. Ann Carter, the real estate agent who handled the transaction, said she sent a "tax bill" to Mr. Eisenhower, but a letter from the President's personal secretary rejected it.
Stevenson, on the other hand, sent a check for a penny with apologies.
"I am having trouble meeting my bills as I have been unemployed for some time," he said. "However, I am glad to make a sacrifice to prevent my Indiana taxes from becoming delinquent."
