Claim Kidnaper Used Benzedrine Before Crime
WASHINGTON (UP)—The Food and Drug Administration obtained a secret "death cell" statement from Carl Austin Hall that he used benzedrine to stimulate himself to kidnap and slay 6-year-old Bobby Greenlease last year, it was disclosed today.
Hall and Mrs. Bonnie Heady were executed last December for the $600,000 Kansas City, Mo., kidnapping.
George P. Larrick, deputy food and drug commissioner, told of the Hall drug "confession" in secret testimony March 24 before a House appropriations subcommittee. The testimony was made public today.
The agency, in other material on the Greenlease case prepared for the subcommittee, stated that Hall admitted to a food and drug official that "he believed he would not have committed the crime if he had not been under the influence of the drug."
Benzedrine is a drug, sold only on a doctor's prescription, and used in cases of depressive neurosis, certain respiratory troubles and in other cases where a stimulant is needed. A food and drug spokesman said it also is used by criminals to "nerve them" and make them "very alert and sharp."
Larrick cited the case to illustrate the need for a nationwide crackdown on the illegal sale of barbiturates, benzedrine, sulfonamides, sex hormones and other similar drugs.

Louisiana Promoting Alligator Hunt
As Inexpensive and Exciting Sport
NEW ORLEANS — Next time the little lady says she wants a genuine alligator handbag, don't worry about the budget.
Go out and catch one yourself.
The Louisiana Wild Life and Fisheries Commission is promoting alligator hunting as an inexpensive and exciting pastime. And a profitable one, with alligator hide bringing $2.75 a foot on the New Orleans market.
All you need, the experts advise, is a Boy Scout hatchet, a 14-foot pole, a sack, and the ability to grunt in reasonable imitation of an alligator.
Wearing overalls and tennis shoes, you hike to a Louisiana swamp where you find not only plenty of alligators but an abundance of mosquitoes, gnats, wasps, briars, spiders and snakes.
Ignoring the other wild life you go to a palmetto or prairie area where there are small but deep water holes. In the cool blue mud of these holes lurks your quarry.
Step Right In
To make certain which hole an alligator is in, you look for a "drag" a flattened area in the brush left by the alligator's body as he entered the hole. Then you step in and feel the warm black water ooze up around your chest.
You prod around in the mud with your pole until it shakes slightly. You have made contact. The surface of the water rises and falls as the alligator emerges from his den.
Now you begin to grunt. It is a nasal sound, designed to arouse the curiosity of the alligator. You hear an eerie hissing reply as the gator exhales during his slow trip to the surface. The reptile's snout breaks the surface and he sniffs the air for the presence of his enemy.
If you're still with us, that's you.

If you’re still with us, that’s you.
Once the alligator sniffs your presence he dives back under the water. You start grunting again. Soon you are likely to feel the alligator bumping against your leg.
Nuzzles Your Leg
The gator has no sense of small under water. Even though he is nuzzling your leg he doesn’t know what it is. Anyway that’s what the men at the Louisiana Fisheries Commission say.
Up moves the alligator along your leg. For reassurance you touch the hatchet hanging at your belt. This is when you begin to think of your loved ones, and the merits of model railroading as a hobby.
The moment the flat, evil-looking head breaks the surface you grab it. You must make sure you grab correctly the first time, with the fingers closing like a vise under the lower jaw and the thumb clamping down atop the snout. Otherwise you might have to learn to write with your other hand.
Now, dodging the lash of the alligator’s equally vicious tail, you bring the hammer end of the hatchet down solidly behind the eyes in the flat area enclosing the brain. Three or four good whacks ought to do the job.
That leaves nothing to do but cart the alligator back to civilization and have a handbag made.
Or could the wife get by this year with something in patent leather?

HONG KONG (UP) — A European recently expelled from Red China said today he knew of 30 Americans imprisoned there and named five/he knew personally were held in a jail in the west section of Peiping.

The American consulate general in Hong Kong has no record of the hometowns of the five Americans.

CALCUTTA, Ind. (UP)—Nurse Genevieve de Galard - Terraube, “Angel of Dien Bien Phu,” said today she hopes to visit the United States before returning to her duties in Indo-China.
The brave young woman who endured the long Communist siege at the fallen French fortress said she may not be able to return to Indo-China, however, because she is a released war prisoner.
“If it is up to me, I’ll write a book about my experiences and visit the United States,” Genevieve said. “I don’t know if I could return to Indochina even if I want to because I am a liberated prisoner.”
Genevieve left Saigon early today on her way to Paris. She is scheduled to reach the French capital tomorrow.
“I have no future program,” she said. “My command will fix it for me.”
Dressed simply in white, she chatted with reporters in a restaurant at Calcutta’s Dum Dum Airport.
The 29-year-old French nurse said she had been offered $25,000 for her book but had not accepted the offer.
She said the first few days at Dien Bien Phu gave her her first exciting experience.
“I had never been under fire before and never saw so many wounded,” she said. “Also I was unable to work as quickly as I wanted because there were so few to attend so many.”
