Three Well-Known Republicans Face Battle for Lieutenant Governor
By JAMES C. ANDERSON United Press Staff Correspondent
SACRAMENTO — Three widely known Republicans and one Democrat are battling it out for the nomination for lieutenant governor in the June 8 primary.
It's a seesaw battle on the Republican side between Harold J. Powers, the incumbent; James W. Silliman, speaker of the Assembly and Frederick F. Houser, former lieutenant governor.
The Democratic candidate is Edward R. Roybal, a Los Angeles city councilman, who has no cinch for his own party's nomination because all three GOP candidates also filed on the Democratic ticket. Roybal followed suit by filing for the Republican nomination too.
Powers is 54, known to everyone in the Capitol as "Butch." He's a true Westerner, addicted to cream colored Stetson hats, cowboy boots, hammered silver belt buckles, and is proud of the fact he comes from Eagleville, a narrow spot in the road in Modoc County where Powers runs a successful cattle ranch.
Son of Senator
Although he looks like he should be playing leads in movie westerns Powers has had 30 years of experience in state government and politics. He's the son of the late Sen. F. J. Powers and himself has held a seat in the State Senate since 1933. Before that he was a Senate minute clerk and attache starting in 1925.
He has been president pro tempore of the senate since 1947 and became lieutenant governor in the two-way promotion involving Earl Warren and Goodwin J. Knight last year. Classes himself as an Earl Warren Republican.
Silliman is 49 and as Assembly speaker since 1951 has held one of the most influential posts in state government. He's a Salinas warehouseman, wealthy, been in the Assembly since 1946. Took power three years ago in the lower
Southland Business Drops During April
LOS ANGELES (UP) — Southern California business activity dropped during April compared to advances for the preceding two months, the Research Department of the Security-First National Bank said today.
The bank's monthly summary of business conditions showed the business index was down 4 per cent compared to April of last year. The index, however, was only 1 per cent below the average for the record year 1953.
Aircraft and other factory employment declined during April. The number of jobless was 55 per cent larger in April this year than a year ago, the report said.
The report said a leveling-off in the business trend seems to have occurred but "there is no clear evidence as yet that a sustained expansion of activity is under way."
Store sales, building activity, building permits and construction all were up.

Chrysler Break Settles Market
NEW YORK (UP)—A break of more than a point in Chrysler unsettled the stock market today.
Chrysler reported a sharp decline in its car and truck production for May and the first five months of the year. Other motors ignored this decline and Packard continued the active issue of the group.
There were enough strong spots in the market to keep the leading averages higher. The industries were given nourishment from the strength in oils and selected chemicals. A good market for Commonwealth Edison sustained the utilities. Rails met late support.
Aircrafts ran up fractions to more that two points early in the day with new highs in Bell, Boeing, Douglas, United and Chance-Vought.
During the course of the session new highs were made by Aluminum Co. of America, Copper Range, and Hammermill Paper.

With its 82-inch telescope, it is the largest open for public observation. Lowell Observatory, a mile from Flagstaff, Arizona, is noted for its study of the planets, particularly Mars.
