Zoo Officials Watch Platypus NEW YORK (UP)—Penelope the platypus, who spent last summer pretending she was a mother, is flirting again with her platypus friend, Cecil. Bronx zoo officials think they've figured out how to keep her from fooling them this time. The furry little duck bill won't be allowed to go near the earth bank in which she builds her nest until her keepers are convinced there's at least a reasonable ground for expectancy. Last summer Penelope spent three and one-half months going through the motions of motherhood. But when zoo officials gently broke open her tunnel in the earth to save the infant from November frost, they found Penelope had never so much as laid an egg. The courtship this time got started last Tuesday, curator William Bridges announced, a month earlier than last year. "Cecil started it, and Penelope has been quite receptive, Bridges reported. As usual among platypuses, Cecil gets a bite on Penelope's tail and she swims around the pool towing him. If Penelope does produce a young platypus or two, it will be something of an event. The breed is a rare ovvirosua mammal—both lays eggs and suckles its young—and young have never been produced in captivity outside their native Australia. Shortening Sales Up For First Three Months Shortening Sales Up For First Three Months WASHINGTON (UP) — The Agriculture Department today reported a 14 per cent increase in shortening sales and a 15 per cent drop in lard consumption the first three months of this year. A fats and oils report forecast little change in per capita food fat consumption this year but predicted lard sales will be the lowest in 20 years. It said consumption of butter and margarine will depend on the nature and the extent of the government's butter disposal program. Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson this week ruled out selling government butter to housewives at cut-rate prices in an effort to get rid of some of the government's huge dairy surplus. But the department is about to launch a nationwide promotion campaign to boost butter and other dairy product sales next month. H-Bombs Extinguish Fire With Own Blast LOS ANGELES (UP) — Fires started by an A or H-bomb blast often could be put out by winds from the initial explosion, a group of UCLA research engineers reported today. The researchers said tests made to determine the effect of an A or H-bomb on wooded areas surrounding urban targets showed that the blast effect itself usually extinguished flames caused by the bomb. Materials such as pine needles, grass, other leaves and pieces of rotting wood were subjected to a simulated A-bomb blast in the experiments. In most cases, flames were completely extinguished. The researchers said almost the same result was obtained when the test was made on materials like cloth and paper. Unemployment Claims Lowest in Three Months WASHINGTON (UP)—Unemployment insurance claims dropped during the first week of May to the lowest level in three months. A total 2,124,600 persons filed claims during the week ended May 8, a decline of 56,800 from the previous week. The total was the lowest since the first week in February when claims numbered 2,119,900. It compares to a 1954 peak of 2,213,000 during the last week in February. Southern Pacific To Spend 65 Million BOSTON (UP) — Southern Pacific Co. disclosed today it expects to spend between 60 and 65 million dollars on capital improvements this year which is down 10 to 15 million from its recent annual average. D. J. Russell, president, said that since World War I the Southern Pacific has spent about 500 million on new plant and equipment. Russell said Southern Pacific's business on the Pacific Coast and in Louisiana and Texas "is better than average for the railroad industry because industrial activity in those areas is holding up better than the total for the country." ouncing a new gasoli superior that we gu BEST in your car IN YOUR CAR your n back WRICHFIELD.
