Robert Higuera Maldonado was committed to Chino prison after pleading guilty to forgery of a $64 check. He was on parole for a 1949 conviction of forgery and grand theft auto charges. Charles Lord Chiaffee, 20, Orange, pleaded guilty to a child stealing charge admitting taking a 14-year-old Garden Grove high school girl to Los Angeles and later to Bakersfield. (UP)—An explosion in outer space, which shattered a star with such cataclysmic force as to make the H-bomb seem like a firecracker in comparison, has been disclosed by scientists. The California Institute of Technology said discovery of the gigantic stellar explosion, which occurred 20,000,000 years ago, was made by Paul Wild, 29-year-old Swiss astrophysics research assistant. The light from the explosion only recently reached the earth and Wild detected it on photographic film taken with the 12-inch telescope at the Mt. Palomar Observatory south of here. The star explosion produced a supernova—an exceptionally bright body—which now is a vast, swirling galaxy of smaller stars known as NGC 5668. The colossal explosion occurred before our primitive human ancestors had appeared on the earth and while the mastodons that dominated the world still were relatively small. Man Burned as Fire Destroys Big Bear Cabin LOS ANGELES — Alfred Mendoza, 45, was in Good Samaritan hospital today suffering from serious burns incurred when a butane tank at the rear of his cabin at Big Bear, ignited. The fire yesterday destroyed a three-room cabin jointly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza and Mrs. Thelma Ruffner. Both women escaped injury. Physician Who Delivered Kuchel Now Top Booster Through most of the 60 years that Dr. H. A. Johnston has been practicing medicine in Orange County, he has had Mother Kuchel as a friend. And she has always counted him as friend, as well as personal physician, for her and her family through illnesses which seems to be everyone's lot in life and he has cared for her when she has given life. Mother Kuchel, as she is known to her many friends, is the mother of U. S. Sen Thomas H. Kuchel and Publisher Ted Kuchel of Anaheim. Dr. Johnston lived next door to Kuchel place at 315 South Claudina St., Anaheim, during the early days. Later, he built a big home on South Los Angeles St., Anaheim, but in recent years he has lived in Fullerton. He was part of the famed Johnston - Wickett Clinic in Anaheim. Sen. Kuchel was but one of babies Dr. Johnston delivered over the years; he has lost track of them all. Not everyone, however, was as famous as Anahelm - born Sen. Kuchel. Dr. Johnston will be honored, along with Dr. C. C. Violette of Garden Grove, the oldest practicing physician in the county, on occasion of the Orange County Medical Association's 60th Anniversary June 10 — and Dr. Johnston was one of its charter members. He has entered a guilty plea to misdemeanor assault two weeks ago, but probation officers said he denied he had kicked John Underwood, a guard in the tuberculosis pavilion at the hospital last Feb. 8. Underwood, however, claimed he attempted to prevent Yanez — a former tuberculosis patient himself — from entering the women's division of the hospital and the man had kicked him in the groin. Superior Judge Robert Gardner said he would not proceed to sentence a man who denied he committed any crime, and set aside the misdemeanor guilty plea. The NAIL BIN by Paul Yesterday was like some kind of an official announcement. After what seemed like weeks of foggy, cold weather the sun finally broke through. And with it came the beginning (we think) of our warm weather. (Eastern visitors please note!) Summer is a well-appreciated time of year but, like anything else that's mostly good, it has a few bad aspects. We're thinking particularly of what has come to be known as "pollo season". It's a heck of a thing to have a season for but, nevertheless, there seem to be more outbreaks of polio in the summer months than at any other time of the year. There have been many articles recently about the new vaccines and serums, but Net Hits in Bedroom Anaheim Resident Incidental discharge of a new long rifle Sunday in Anaheim, for a while had local police hunt for the mystery marks after a bullet entered the room of a neighbor and torched hole in the ceiling. It's a heck of a thing to have a season for but, nevertheless, there seem to be more outbreaks of pollo in the summer months than at any other time of the year. There have been many articles recently about the new vaccines and serums, but there is still some question as to how effective they'll be. Now one of the carriers of the polio germ, so we're told, is the common housefly. So, if you don't mind, we'd like to talk a little about that pest. If you have a garbage disposal at your house you probably don't have much trouble with flys. With a disposal in the sink, garbage doesn't get to stay around long enough for the flys to find it. But if you don't have one then you no doubt have a regular old garbage can. It's probably way out in the back, but it's there. Winter wasn't so bad, except for having to go out in the rain to get to it. But summer is somthing else again. Just about now you are beginning to notice more flys hanging around, and it'll be like that for the next few months. Maybe you have forgotten those little disks that fit on the inside top of a garbage can lid. There are two or three different kinds on the market but they all do the same thing. These disks have an odor to them. As far as a person is concerned the odor is harly noticeable, but flys think it stinks — and that's good.
