Reveal New Record Set By Exemption Claims SANTA ANA — With 16,417 tax-exemption claims already filed with Orange County Assessor Hugh J. Plumb, to establish a record, the total may reach 19,000 for an even greater gain by the close of the filing period June 1. Last year the claims totaled 14,092. Plumb's office force processed 407 claims Friday, including 197 new ones — or first - timers in the county — and that itself was a record. The Thursday filings accounted for 276 claims, with 132 new; Wednesday, it was 257, with 101 new; on Tuesday, 244 claims with 94 of them first - timers; and last Monday they totaled 283 with 111 of them new. Fifty deputies in the field, doing assessments, also can take claims for veterans' exemptions and some will be renewed by mail. And, by the last day Tuesday, June 1, the rush may be terrific. The law says that May 31 is the final day, but since Memorial Day is being observed them. Plumb's office will be open until 5 p.m. Tuesday to take more exemption applications. Athletic Associations To Form State Group FRESNO (UP) — Some 30 California Collegiate Athletic Association officials will open a two-day meeting here tomorrow to discuss possible formation of a State College Conference. The conference was proposed recently by state college presidents. New Yorkers Plans Pacific Trip CALLLAO, PÉru, (UP) — A 60-year-old New Yorker plans to set out across the Pacific Ocean alone on a raft next month to prove that man can conquer the sea "with his bare hands." William Willis, who describes himself as a writer and mariner, wants to pit his strength, skill and endurance against the weather and enormous distances of the Pacific. If he succeeds, his feat would be more remarkable than the 4300-mile voyage of the raft Kon-Tiki which carried six Scandinavian explorers from South America to Tahiti seevn years ago. Quite Confident "I just want to show that a lone man can conquer the ocean and fury of the elements with his bare hands and the most rudimentary means of navigation," he said. His raft, made of seven balsa three trunks and named the "seven Little Brothers," is about half the size of the 45-foot Kon-Tiki. It is fitted with two masts and a small cabin. Willis will carry two magnetic compasses and a radio receiver, but no transmitter. He will be able to get news from the rest of the world but will have no means of communicating back or seeking help if he gets in trouble. A small native canoe is lashed to the raft. Short Rations During the voyage he plans to eat only "Machica," a cereal food made from a wild variety of Peruvian corn. He will have some additional rations stowed aboard but plans to use them only in an emerger. Athletic Associations To Form State Group FRESNO (UP) — Some 30 California Collegiate Athletic Association officials will open a two-day meeting here tomorrow to discuss possible formation of a State College Conference. The conference was proposed recently by state college presidents in a Chico session. The new league would include members of the present CAA and Far Western Conference. Schools to be represented at the sessions include San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and Fresno. Results Are the Proof of Newspaper Circulation. Short Rations During the voyage he plans to eat only "Machica," a cereal food made from a wild variety of Peruvian corn. He will have some additional rations stowed aboard but plans to use them only in an emergency. His route will follow the Humboldt current, the some westward flow which carried the Kon-Tiki from Callao to Tahiti between April and September in 1947. Willis hopes to sail farther, ending his voyage at Samoa more than 6000 miles from his starting point. The adventure has been a "golden dream" of his for years, Willis said, and he had not attempted it earlier because of opposition from his wife. She is with him here and apparently is resigned to see him set off alone. There's No Substitute for Paid Circulation. DIXON'S ELECTRIC Commercial and Residential Wiring PHONE:— DAY JA 7-3001 NIGHT KE 5-9573 Patty Garden seed, famed world traveller who has distributed more than half a million packages of seeds to countries around the world, was guest speaker at the Lions Club Friday. He told the Lions of his travels and the people he has met and talked to including nationally known figures in both politics and military. Once described as "as a one man Marshall Plan," Patty Gardenseed said he was determined to plant a green band round the world to beat the Red. He said he was preparing to leave on another voyage the latter part of this month or the first of July and was asking for contributions to buy more seeds for distribution in the Far East. Patty Gardenseed was introduced by Harry Barnes, program chairman of the day. President Dick Glover presided over the meeting.
