50 Americans In Italian Tear Gas Attack on Reds
ROME (UP) — Welcome to Italy department:
It will be news to the polite police of Genoa, but they tear-gassed 50 American men and women in a tourist bus the other day.
The driver blundered into a Communist riot. The Americans were caught with their windows down. A tear gas bomb fell into the aisle and the Americans began bawling furiously. The excited driver shouted "We not go to Columbus house today" and sped back to the hotel.
Reports of a rift between Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini drew denials here. They were married by proxy in Mexico four years ago this month.
Any Italian will tell you that the Americans have done something about the weather. Universal blame for the worst spring in memory goes to the H-bomb in the Pacific. There was only one day completely free of rain here in the first 15 days of May and sidewalk cafes are doing their worst trade in years. But the women still insist on wearing dark glasses with umbrellas.

Reveal New Industrial Growth in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Industrial investment in Los Angeles county during April was $19,420,000 for 44 new and expanded plants. The Chamber of Commerce reported today.
The figure exceeds the capital investment for each of the three preceding months.
Brazil to Found New Fertility Institute
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (UP)—President Getulio Vargas has forwarded to the National Health Council a proposal calling for the creation of a federal fertility institute, it was announced today.
The plan, submitted by Health Minister Miguel Couto Filho, calls attention to the fact that one out of every five Brazilian couples is childless and said the condition "merits the attention of the public authorities."
Name Figure for School Repayment to California
SACRAMENTO (UP)—Annual repayments on loans for school house construction will total $5,-301,536 during fiscal 1964-55. Controller Robert C. Kirkwood said today.
Kirkwood said the money is owed the state by 321 school districts of the 283 which received state aid under a 250 million dollar bond issue approved by the voters in November, 1949.

Big Crops, Low Peso, To Bring Farm Workers
EL PASO, Tex. (UP)—Mexican braceros, with their minds on their devalued peso and eyes on the coveted Yankee dollar, may swarm across the border legally and illegally this season to cash in on farm work, some border officials reported today.
The observers expect an increase in the flow of "weetbacks" because crops in some border areas are below par and official entry quotas may be low. The extra buying power of the dollar as compared with the peso also may attract many from south of the border.
A group of 2,000 Mexican workers recently gathered in Juarez, just across the border from El Paso, seeking entry into the United States, but the illegal invasion was repelled by Mexican and U.S. authorities.
Crops in the El Paso area have not recovered fully from the drought in some cases and jobs may be few. Cattlemen said range prospects have been brightened by recent rains, but the Bureau of Reclamation announced farmers will not receive an additional allotment of irrigation water from the Rio Grande to supplement the 301,536 during fiscal 1964-55, Controller Robert C. Kirkwood said today.

Cult President Donates Million
LOS ANGELES, Calif., (UP) — J. J. Lynn, wealthy Kansas City, Mo., insurance executive, has donated one million dollars to a cult called the "self Realization Fellowship."
Lynn, 59, has served for two years as president of the organization, which was founded by the late Paramhansa Yogananda in 1925. Lynn's name in the group is Rajasi Janakananda.
He announced the donation yesterday from his hospital bed at the hospital of the Good Samaritan, where he is recovering from surgery.
His gift included 22,000 shares of Kansas City Southern Railway stock. He is a director and one of the largest stockholders of the railway. He also is president of the U. S. Epperson Underwriting and the Lynn Underwriting companies of Kansas City.
"I am very pleased to present to the Self Realization fellowship, a nonsectarian organization, this money to help it bring its message of very real value to the people of the world," Lynn said through a spokesman.

LOS ANGELES (UP)—Job-hunting will be tougher for Southern California college seniors this summer than it has been for four years, says a UCLA personnel expert.

Factory Employment Falls Off In City
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Factory employment fell 4,700 last month in the metropolitan Los Angeles area, Paul Scharrenberg, state director of industrial relations, reported today.
Scharrenberg said the drop was caused by a seasonal dip in the apparel industry and layoffs at automobile plants. It brought the total employed in manufacturing plants here to 629,000, which is 16,000 below that of April, 1953.

LOS ANGELES (UP)—Job-hunting will be tougher for Southern California college seniors this summer than it has been for four years, says a UCLA personnel expert.
John W. Adams, manager of UCLA's Bureau of Occupations, said graduates with limited qualifications "will find the going rough."
Adams warned of overcrowding in industrial relations, management trainee positions, personnel work, public relations, advertising, movies, television and journalism.
He said a need still exists for graduates trained in engineering, mathematics, accounting, physical sciences and teaching.
Japanese 'Capistrano' Now Boycotted by Birds
MATSUYAMA, Japan (UP) — Prof. Hideaki Shimizu of Ehime University said today that fewer swallows are coming back to the Shikoku Island—Japan's Capistrano.
He blames American H-bomb experiments in the Pacific which spread radioactive dust over the birds' South Sea winter home. Besides he added, insecticides are destroying the swallows: food supply here.
Leo Carrillo Named To Head Kuchel Demos
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Actor Leo Carrillo has been appointed to the executive committee of the Demo crats for U. S. Sen. Thomas H. Kuchel Campaign Committee for Southern California, it was announced today.
