SIDELINE UPPOSITIONS BY BOB ZIMMER George Perry, president of the Anaheim Riding Club, has sent in some regulations to be followed by riders and hikers using the first section of the long-awaited trails on the levees of the Santa Ana River. This section is located between Hamilton Street, Costa Mesa, and W. 17th Street, Santa Ana. Riders are requested to take only on the east levee while crossing the west levee is permitted only at the ramp constructed at the end of Wintersburg Road near the Harbor Boulevard Bridge and the ramp from the Santa Ana Stables near 17th Street. Riders are asked not to ride directly in wheel tracks on levees. Other regulations include: No Autos Motor-driven vehicles will not be permitted on east levee except for county patrol, maintenance or fire; No smoking while riding or hiking. Smoke only in cleared areas; No riding up or down sides of levees. Ride only designated trail; Enter or leave the trail only at designated openings; No trespassing on private property adjacent to trail and no picking of fruit adjacent to trail; Record and report all acts of vandalism, trespassing or violation of trails rules to the proper authorities. According to Perry, the proposal to continue the trail the entire length of the river hinges on the satisfactory use of this section on a trial basis if he urges all riders to faithfully observe the regulations. COLLEGIATE STAR Mary Flynn of Anaheim, former Orange County junior tennis champion, is adding to her laurels on eastern courts. She recently defeated Pat Ratterman of Cincinnati, 6-3, 7-5 to capture the Trinity College of Washington, D.C. championship. She also advanced to the semi-finals of a national intercollegiate tournament before losing to May Jo Daly of Chicago, 6-3, 9-7. Billy Canrell of Anaheim will drive a 1954 McCulloch supercharged Kaiser in the 500-lap stock car race at the Carrell Speedway Sunday. Canrell won the first race ever held on the Carrell oval in 1928. Since The Carrell Speedway will be razed, starting next Tuesday, to make way for a free-way, Canrell is eager to close out with another victory. He has won the last two feature races at the Gardena speedway, one in the midgets and one in sprint cars. Al Musil Santa Ana YMCA physical education director for eight years, has accepted a position as aquatic and gymnastic coach at Garden Grove High School. He will also be in charge of the summer swimming program in that city. Musil produced several national champion gymnasts at the Santa Ana Y. Andy, the handy dandy, who never hits .300, never sets the pace in runs batted in or in homers, nevertheless comes through with those clutch touch hits that win key ball games. Wednesday night it was Pafko who stretched Milwaukee's winning streak to nine games with his fourth hit, a single that brought in Danny O'Connell, who had doubled, for a 7-5 victory over Cincinnati Pafko drove in two runs and so scored a pair himself. Pafko Carries Load When the Braves dealt pitchers Johnny Antonelli and Don Liddle to the Giant last winter for Bobby Thomson it figured that Pafko might have to move to the bench, at least occasionally. Now with Thomson still out indefinitely with his broken ankle, Pafko is carrying the load. Moreover, the Braves are putting the lie to the critics who said they gave up too much pitching in the Thomson deal. Wednesday night, young Gene Conley pitched his fourth victory against a lone defeat for the Braves, putting him even with Chet Nichols (4-3) in victories. Nichols and Conley were the pitchers replacing Liddle and Antonelli, who at this stage last season each had a 2-1 record. Thus Conley and Nichols overall now are 8-4 as against 4-2 at the same period for the men they replaced. Robin Roberts finally ended his seven-game losing streak against the Dodgers, beating them 8-6 with the aid of five runs driven in by Del Ennis. The Giants took over second place with their fifth straight victory, 2-1 over Pittsburgh on Ruben Gomez' six-hit pitching and a fifth inning homer by Davey Williams. The Cubs pounded out homers by Ernie Banks, Joe Garagiola, Hank Sauer and Dee Fondy in a 15-5 drubbing of the Cardinals. Chicago made it two in a row over the pace-setting Indians in the American League race, cutting their lead to ½ game with a 5-4 triumph. The Senators finally beat lefty Ed Lopat of the Yankees after he had run up 11 straight triumphs against them, winning 2-1 on Jim Lemon's ninth inning single. Philadelphia topped Boston 6-5 in 10 innings while Detroit handed Baltimore its sixth straight defeat, 6-3. Ennis Stars Ennis hit a three-run homer and drove in other tallies with a fly ball and infield out as lefty Johnny Podres suffered the first loss of his career in Brooklyn. Gil Hodges hit his 100th home in Brooklyn and the 180th of his career while Duke Snider also homered for Brooklyn and Willie Jones got one for the Phils. Williams' homer provided the difference for the onrushing Giants as Gomez won a tough duel with loser Vern Law, who gave up only four hits. The Cubs, who lead the majors in homers, boosted their total to 50 with their 14-hit triumph over the Cardinals in which Sauer got his 13th, driving in four runs with two hits. Fondy got four hits. Bob Porterfield, who has won five straight and six for the season, building up his streak while the Senators were winning seven and losing 14, held the Yankees to seven hits. Singles by Pete Runnels and Ed Fitzgerald preceded Lemon's winning hit for the Nats in the ninth. And the Hollywood Stars, a bust at the beginning of the season, were steadily increasing the dimensions in the upper part of the loop. The Twinks mashed San Diego, 10-0 last night to drop them into a second place tie with Sacramento, 4-1 victor over the Oakland Oaks. The jack-in-the-box San Francisco Seals further tightened the first division fight with a 2-1 victory over Seattle which left the Seals only a game and a half behind San Diego. Portland beat Los Angeles 6-2 in their tussle for the cellar. Three-hit Pitching The Stars got three-hit pitching from Lino Donoso to scuttle San Diego and increase their league lead to a fat five and a half games. Donoso gave up only three singles to the Padres and was backed by a more-than-sufficient 18-hit attack. The victory was the second straight for the Padres this week and the seventh win in a row for Hollywood as the Stars continued to eliminate all opposition. Sacramento back into a second place tie after the Solons' disasterous encounter with Hollywood by evening their series with Oakland. Young Bud Daley, obtained by the Sacs from the Cleveland Indians, organization made his first PCL start. He was in constant trouble, giving up 10 hits and walking four, but kept the Oaks away from the plate except in the sixth inning. Daley's batterymate, Roy Partee drove in two Sacramento runs and outfielder Ed Bockman plated the other pair. Oak Harry Nicholas took the loss. Seals Win Again The surprising Seals again came from behind with runs in the eighth and ninth to down Seattle and make it 14 victories in their last 16 starts. Ken Holcombe and Adrian Zabala held the Rainliers to five hits with reliever Zabala getting the win. Gene Bearden was, the loser. The winning SF run in the ninth was manufactured from a double by pinch-hitter Al Lyons and an rbi-single by Reno Cheso. Big left-chander Bill Boemler pitched the Beams in the entire PCL night. Chuck is through," said Davey's manager, Hec Knowles, after Wednesday night's one-sided televised fight in which the now-deflated TV idol was floored three times and stopped in the seventh round. Davey wouldn't agree immediately — he wants a little time to think it over. "I don't want to make up my mind now," said Davey. "I'm going home Thursday and maybe Friday or Saturday I'll decide." But Knowles repeated, "He is through. He won't take that Los Angeles match with Art Avragon (scheduled for July 1)." In contrast to Davey's dejection, Martinez was beaming and brimming with confidence in the wake of his easy triumph. With a breezy air, he asked for a shot at welter champ Kid Gavilan and predicted he'd beat him. "Gavilan doesn't move too well," said the Paterson, N.J., scrapper who currently is not even ranked among the top 10 in the welter division. "I hit Davey with my right all night. No, not all night, and I probably couldn't hit Gavilan fight, I know I can beat him." Martinez, a 2-1 betting choice, As guests of Bob Boney, the pro tem directors of the newly-formed Anaheim Golf and Country Club held a luncheon meeting yesterday at the Balboa Bay Club. Host K. T. Kendall, president of the swank beach club, sat in consultation with the local group to discuss the multiplicity of organizational problems confronting any new privately financed recreational facility. "It is the hope and desire of this temporary committee that financing plan which will be-mately offered to potential members will be in the best interests of both members and the club," said Chairman Dick Gay. "Public confidence in the finally chosen course of action will be demonstrated only by the early response of those who seek affiliation with a private club," Gay concluded. Committee members reported many inquiries were received by them following Tuesday's press coverage of the initial meeting. Chairman Gay suggests that requests for applications may be mailed to the club in care of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce. llywood in an exhibition game at Buena Park tonight at 8 o'clock. The same two clubs will tangle at Hollywood Saturday night. Hollywood is an associate member of the Pacific Coast Girls League, but their games do not count in the standings. Sally Russell twirled a five-hitter as the Puente Gold Sox upset the Lynx, 5-2, at Buena Park Tuesday night. Puente cut loose for four runs in the top of the eighth on a double, a pair of singles, a walk and a hit batsman. The Lynx could tally only one in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Kathleen Bielefeld and Johnna Moore. Carol Spanks, who went the route for Buena Park, gave up only two hits in the regulation seven innings, but weakened in the eighth. Buena Park came from behind to tie the score in the last of the fifth on singles by Ruth Waldo and Marty Isenberg and an outfield error.
