CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
NOW Craig pressed his finger tips to his eyes and cursed again. His anger had to include Craig Talboy. He'd known from his first eight of the radiant girl with that red-gold hair, her beautiful violet eyes and her soft voice.
He was glad she had left. Wherever she had gone, she would be better off out of this mean.
Someday he would follow her, find her, and—maybe—
The telephone rang, and he joined spasmodically. Lord, he told himself, he was in a state! Dr. Talboy? He said grudely into the phone. If it was any one of the Carra, checking on him.
It was the plant; there'd been an accident on the tracks... "Till come at once."
"You stay here," he told Donald, who opened his black eyes, sighed, and went back to sleep.
Driving the short distance, Craig sternly caught at his quivering nerve ends. He'd need every ounce of control if—The man who called had said the injured person was hurt too badly to put into an ambulance; they'd need a doctor first.
As with all such industries, the refractories had to be in continuous operation, seven days of the week. The offices, of course, were closed on Sunday, but the general process of manufacture went on without interruption. Across the web of tracks, Craig saw the ambulance and the usual knot of onlookers, the idly curious and the would-be helpful. He drove as Poorboy Johnson. Doc, is my legs gone?
"One is hurt. Now, look, Poorboy. Your right leg is under the wheel. I'm going to pull your left one away from the track, and hold it. If you'll lie perfectly still—the don't even move an eyelash—the engine can be backed away, and we can get you to the hospital. But if you move—"
"I ain' gonna move, Doc—but, oh, God, be sure that engineer he don't go in de wrong di-rection!"
Craig summoned the switchman, and gave his orders. "Engineer o.k." he asked.
"I guess so, Doc. Why?"
Because he must do exactly what I say. You tell him that I'll keep Johnson's other leg tree of the track; he's to reverse—and only reverse—you got that? Tell him, and come back here to signal him when we're ready.
He bent over his patient. He maneuvered the left leg clear of the rail, held it. He gave Poorboy his directions. When the switchman returned, at a nod from the doctor, he swung his arm in a wide arc—slowly, surely, the great blue and silver Diesel slid its wheels back—and the man was free. A cheer went up from the crowd of workmen.
"Now, said Craig quietly, 'let's get this man to the hospital.'"
The stretcher came up, Craig helped put the man on it and began to put his instruments back into his bag. His yellow sweater was dark with blood.... "Thank you, Evans," he said quietly. "You did a fine job."
"I did a fine job!" gasped the it was ten when he pushed car to the curb before the brick house. Rain still felt mittently, and Myra were sitting inside.
Myra looked up at trance, her grave darkening in his Brooks Brothel his tie—"I wondered why git here," she said calmly.
"Were you expecting..." "Of course I was. With body in town askn' where'y got to, I knew y'here ..."
"Everybody in town know where she is." Craig face was hard.
"I don't happen to be body," she pointed out.
"Will you tell me whi is, too?" Dee sat in his chair and watched them.
"That too doesn't sign Myra said." I told nobodie she went.
Craig took a deep breath. "Hear there was a evident at the plant," unsteady.
"There was," Craig briefly he recounted what happened.
"Is the man safe to case you do leave?" asks
"The shortest distance two points," drawled by band, "lies through Myra box."
"And it couldn't pick place!" chuckled Craig. "he'll be safe. Myra Dr. W care for him—if I leave."
"That's good." Craig waited, and Dike
called had said the injured person was hurt too badly to put into an ambulance; they'd need a doctor first.
As with all such industries, the extractors had to be in continuous operation, seven days of the week. The offices, of course, were closed on Sunday, but the general process of manufacture went on without interruption. Across the web of tracks, Craig saw the ambulance and the usual knot of onlookers, the idly curious and the would-be helpful. He drove as close as he could get, grabbed his bag and went around one of the hand-fired kilns: his feet crunched on the fine rock, notifying the group of his approach. They fell back; he muttered a hope that the standing switch engine was not involved—but to no avail. His injured man lay under the very wheels of it.
A Negro—one leg crushed—conscious, poor devil.
And the switchman was there ready to babble his story.
"He was lying on the tracks, Don. I gave a signal but before the engineer saw it, and could stop—one wheel was on his tail—if we'd moved another half-inch, we'd got his left leg, too."
"Yes," said Craig, setting down his bag. He spread a towel, slid out certain instruments, selected a morphine hypo. He glanced at the crowd, and chose his man. Bob Evans, straw boss—the defiant man who would obey none of Craig's safety regulations. But here, surely, Evans would co-operate! "I'm going under and give first aid," he said quietly. "When I ask for things, Bob, you pick them up by the handles, and give them to me."
"I can't stand the sight of blood, Doc," said the big man. Indeed his face was a fine cyclone green.
"You ever kill a chicken?"
"Well, sure, Doc, but—"
"Then you can help me."
Even as he spoke, Craig was on his knees, crawling under the Diesel—he didn't have a lot of room. The hurt man was still conscious, and groaning, praying. Craig managed a tourniquet, called for a haemostat or two—and then the syringe. "What's your name?" he asked the Negro.
"Poorboy," the man gasped.

IT WAS TEN WHEN HE PULLED HIS HARRING CURB BEFORE THE YELLOW CRICK HOUSE. RAIN STILL INTERMITTENTLY, AND MYRA AND DKE SEEINED INSIDE.
MYRA LOOKED UP AT HIS ENTRANCE, HER GRAVE DARK EYES TAKING IN BROOKS BROTHERS SUIT, IS TIED "I WONDERED WHEN YOU'D IT HERE," THE SAID CALMLY.
"WERE YOU EXPECTING ME?" OF COURSE I WAS. WITH EVERYONE IN TOWN ASKIN' WHERE SHE GOT TO, I KNOW YOU'D BE HERE."
EVERYBODY IN TOWN THINKS I NOW WHERE SHE IS." Craig'S dark face was hard.
"I DON'T HAPPEN TO BE EVERYBODY," she pointed out serenely.
"Will YOU TELL ME WHERE She Is, Too?" Dee SAT IN HIS CHAIR AND LISTENED, watched them.
"That too doesn't signify," Myra said. "I told nobody where he went."
Craig took a deep breath.
"Heard there was a bad accident at the plant," said Dke Measly.
There was," Craig answered. Briefly he recounted what had happened.
Is the man safe to leave—case you do leave?" asked Myra.
The shortest distance between two points," drawled her husband," "Lies through Myra's think-ox."
"And it couldn't pick a better place!" chuckled Craig. "Yes, will be safe, Myra. Dr. Ward will care for him—if I leave."
That's good."
Craig waited, and Dke grinned.

It was ten when he pulled his arm to the curb before the yellow crick house. Rain still intermittently, and Myra and Dke were sitting inside.
Myra looked up at his entrance, her grave dark eyes taking in his Brooks Brothers suit, is tied "I wondered whin you'd it here," she said calmly.
"Were you expecting me?" Of course I was. With everybody in town askin' where Shelly got to, I knew you'd be here."
Everybody in town thinks I know where she is." Craig's dark face was hard.

"There was," Craig answered, briefly he recounted what had happened.
"Is the man safe to leave—case you do leave?" asked Myra. "The shortest distance between two points," drawled her husband, "lies through Myra's think-box."
"And it couldn't pick a better place!" chuckled Craig. "Yes, we'll be safe, Myra. Dr. Ward will care for him—if I leave."
"That's good." Craig waited, and Dke grinned at him.
"Well, tell me this," said the doctor finally. "Do you think she'll be all right—wherever she is?"
"I know she'll be all right. Even if she nadn't left—Last spring she and I were walking up the stairs of this house on the night we busted the first whippoorwill. You couldn't ask a better omen!"
"Tell the man where Shelly's gone," urged Ike. "You know you're going to."
"I'm a-waitin' for him to tell me why she ran away."
Craig frowned. "Don't you know?
I don't think Shelly knew. But I reckoned you mought."
"Well, perhaps I do. You see Saturday night—Quickly he told the story, even mentioning Eleanor's red dress. With gestures that made the Vandables laugh.
"And Shelly ran nome and put on that pink, shiny dress..." Myra supplied.
"She looked lovely, Myra!" said Craig, fervently.
"She did so. She is lovely. To the core. And the thing I can't understand, Craig, is that those rich, smug people she's related to don't know what they have in that gut!"
"They know, I feel sure. But they also know that they are rich and amug."
Myra's face brightened. "Well, of course, then they couldn't rest easy," she declared.
Craig stood up. "You didn't tell even them where Shelly had gone?"
"No. But nere—" Her angers explored the pocket of her dress. It's this name and address and telephone number. You can copy it. It's an uncle—or a cousin."

THURSDAY, MAY 27—"Dodsworth," adapted from the late Sidney Howard's dramatization of the novel by the late Nobel-prize-winning author, Sinclair Lewis, will be presented on the "TV Theater" over Channel 7, starting at 6:30 p.m. This is the story of Sam Dodsworth, a wealthy mid-western automobile manufacturer, and his frivolous middle-aged wife, Fran, who yearns for romance and "culture" as first exemplified by Continental heel-clickers... Joan Fontaine portrays a young woman who single-handedly wrecks a political machine in the comedy, "Girl on a Park Bench," which will be given a repeat performance on "Four Star Playhouse" tonight at 8:30 over Channel 2. There's a surprising twist to the farce that shouldn't be missed... On the same channel at 9 o'clock, Suzan Ball, the lovely 21-year-old actress whose gallant battle against a malignant disease, won her the admiration of millions of people the world over, and her husband, actor Dick Long, will appear together for the first time professionally when they both make their live dramatic debuts on "Video Theater"... "Keep it in the Family" with Robert Young on Channel 4 at 9:30.
