Five Year Old Daughter Receives Posthumous Medal for Marine Father
EL TORO MARINE BASE), (OCNS) — Five-year-old Larlayn Better Friday received a posthumous Distinguished Flying Cross and citation from Brigadier General John N. Hart, deputy commander, aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific.
Larlayn is the daughter of Marine Major Grover R. Betzer, former executive officer and pilot with a Marine attack squadron at tached to the aircraft carrier USS Bataan. Major Betzer was killed while carrying out a close air-support mission in Korea. Before reading the citation, General Hart first read a letter to Larlayn from General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Marine Corps commandant, which expressed both his and the Marine Corps' sympathy in the loss of Marine hero Betzer.
The medal and citation were for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight in connection with operations against enemy forces in Korea on February 24, 1953. The citation read in part, "Major Betzer participated in the rescue of a downed Marine aviator who was surrounded by enemy troops after crash-landing his aircraft deep in hostile territory."
Major Betzer carried out a series of low-level strafing attacks in the face of intense and accurate barrages of enemy fire to draw the fire away from the downed pilot. Even after he had expended his ammunition, he launched a series of simulated strafing attacks which enabled a rescue helicopter to pick up the helpless pilot." Major Betzer was killed trying to save the other pilot. Larlayn lives with her mother and step-father, Major and Mrs. Jack Perry of Santa Ana.
