Village Trembles
When Church
‘News’ Issued
By WILLIAM TUCKER
United Press Correspondent
STONE MOUNTAIN, Fa... (UP)
When certain husbands walk shame-faced ‘into the Stone Mountain Methodist Church Sunday the chances are their sins already will have been bared for them by the Rev. Lamar H. Watkins in his weekly church bulletin.
The Rev. Watkins is not a man to pull his punches with platitudes when he can win penitence with a sharp frontal assault from his typewriter.
When the weekly Methodist Church News comes off the pastor’s mimeograph this entire village near Atlanta trembles with trepidation. No one — not the mayor, rival ministers, the congregation, nor even little children are safe from his salty barbs.
Hymn Book Worries
Watkins lately has been worried about the hymn book situation.
“There are too many Methodists,” he wrote, “who come to church once or twice a year, throw a nickel in the plate and then walk out with 10 or 12 dollars worth of hymn books. Mrs. Hugh Jordan, (he asks a member) what kind of religion is that?
“If you love sacred music and feel that you must have a few hymn books around to tone up the atmosphere of your home, why don’t you do the decent and honorable thing?” the bulletin continued.
“Exercise a little Christian patience and wait until the Baptists have their revival. Then you can pick up a few hymn books without working a hardship on any of us.”
And there’s the matter of the street light.

Exercise a little Christian patience and wait until the Baptists have their revival. Then you can pick up a few hymn books without working a hardship on any of us."
And there's the matter of the street light.
"A street light definitely will be placed in front of the Methodist church," the pastor wrote. "Our beloved mayor has done all he can and now awaits action from the Georgia Power Co.
Thnk you very much, Mr. Mayor, for these reassuring words. The Methodists are not a cantankerous people. With an Episcopalian running the town and a couple of Baptists drilling our teeth all week, most Methodists in Stone Mountain stay scared half to death most of the time."
Violence Sanctioned
The pastor then poses this question: "Does one human being ever have a moral right to use physical violence upon another?"
Answer: "Why yes, Frances, I think you have a perfect right to do anything you can to get Ogle to church."
The pastor is especially concerned about member Tom McConnell.
"Last Sunday night," he wrote, "a record-breaking crowd jammed into the Methodist church. The report had got out that Tom McConnell was coming.
Unfortunately this was not true. Tom was down on Jackson Lake. The question was then raised as to what a morally rigid puritan (we are still talking about Tom) was doing on a lake on Sunday.
Bill Meathoy became very embarrassed. He said he didn't know exactly what Tom was doing down at the lake, but he thought he must have gone to a baptizing. This is probably true. When a man like Tom gets a strong case of religion it's mighty hard to hold him down."

Construction of Private Homes Sets New Mark
WASHINGTON (UP)—The Labor Department reported today that private home construction smashed a 3½-year record in April when there were 109,100 new starts.
It said starts on privately financed units actually rose 14 per cent between March and April and that the increase was general in all parts of the country except the Southeast.
The construction boom this spring is considered one of the brightest spots in the economy. It is credited with helping to stem rising unemployment.
The department announced Friday night that the number of persons filing new claims for unemployment insurance jumped 10 per cent during the first week of May to a total of 327,200.
It said about half the rise came from unemployed who were ineligible to apply for insurance payments before May 1. The rest of the increase stemmed from new job layoffs in the auto, apparel, electrical machinery and aircraft industries.
Despite the rise in insurance claims, total unemployment actually is considered down because of tion, farm, and various other groups connected with springtime activity. A joint Labor-Commerce department report showed last Friday that the jobless total dropped 260,000 from mid-March to April.

Revealed to Reds
These shipments usually passed to an ostensibly le-import company to help by customs men. Some did. Others get through. State Department announced "an important shipment has reached Guatemala that put the spotlight on operations."
Ala is not a Communist though its government has used of subjecting itself unjust influence. In any United States does not arms which might reachists to be sent to Western are countries. The State's view of the Guatemala was:

A department spokesman said that the Communist shiprms to Guatemala couldered a threat to the se-Western Hemisphere.
