COMMUNIST HORDES Anaheim Daily-Herald ANAHEIM TWENTY PAGES IN TWO PARTS ANAHEIM Candidates Unopposed in Holve, Coons Seeks AUHS Positions, Thompson, Mary, Elementary Posts Two unopposed positions for Anaheim Union High School trustees and for Anaheim Elementary school trustees will come before voters tomorrow. Candidates for the two high school positions will be Rex Coons, local building contractor and former chairman of the elementary board; and Al Holve, prominent Anaheim citrus rancher and business man. There is no competition either for elementary posts with Joseph Thompson and incumbent John P. Mary Jr. lined up for the posts. Although five names appear on the ballot for high school trustee, voters were warned that only two are now officially running for election, since candidates Jack Polley, Dick Henning and Art Shipkey have officially withdrawn. Charred Corpse Found in Ruins Of Burned Shack SANTA ANA, (OCNS) — The charred and grisley corpse of an elderly Santa Anan puzzled police and fire authorities today. The body was discovered early this morning sitting among the embers of a flame - gutted shack at 515 North Daisy St. The body has been tentatively identified as that of 55 - year - old Evaristo Avila Rivas by relatives. The smouldering corpse was found sitting on what appeared to be the blackened timbers of an orange crate. The building had collapsed around the body and only the charred remains poked above the mound of smoking rubble. The fire reportedly began shortly before 2 o'clock this morning. Firemen say the structure went down in flames almost before they could reach the scene. The body was sitting complacently, as if waiting for death on its grisley perch. The clothes were entirely burned away and the body was scorched beyond recognition. However, police learned from a relative that the elderly Rivas had been living in the shack for the past four years. The building had no electricity and Rivas reportedly used a kerosene lamp to light the place at night. The kerosene lamp, however, was known to be broken, and it was reported that Rivas frequently used matches to illuminate the building. The Orange County Coroner's office reports that Rivas died of fourth degree burns over the entire portion of his body. They say that investigators have been unable to find any evidence of foul play and the death will be termed "accidental". Coroner's reputies say they cannot find the cause of the fire. The 54-year-old Santa Ana nurse and police that she was crossing roadway Avenue at 15th Street had looked both ways. But then she started across the intersection, she says, her car was pushed into by an auto being driven by Mayor Pearson, 56, of 685 with Helena street, Anaheim. She says she didn't think much about the accident — although both cars were hauled away to the garage — until her insurance company insisted she have a medical examination to determine if she suffered any injuries in the crash. When she went to the doctor's office, she found she had received a bruised arm, leg and chest. McCarthy to explain his side to President Eisenhower before the Army-McCarthy row "exploded" publicly. But Presidential Press Secretary James C. Hanoi Near Panic As Rebel Force Moves East HANOI, Indochina — The vanguard of Communist Gen. Ve Nguyen Giap's victorious Red army approached the outer defenses of the Red River Delta today. Hanoi, the key to French defenses in North Indochina, was near panic. Corsair fighters ranging west along Colonial Route 41 said the advance elements of the Communist hordes which crushed Dien Bien Phu have pushed three miles beyond Moc Chau. They now are only 75 miles from Hanoi itself. Dien Bien Phu Reds These troops were described as the vanguard of four divisions moving eastward after their victory at Dien Bien Phu. Rumors swept Hanoi that Chief of Staff Gen. Paul Ely had arrive to direct the French evacuation of Tonkin Province in which Hanoi is located. Communist leaflets circulated through the native quarters saying that Giap was about to launch a sweeping offensive against the rice rich delta. Other propaganda leaflets claimed the Hanoi-Haiiphong highway and railroad, which connect this inland capital with the sea, will be cut shortly and the city isolated. Population Jittery The French population of this city was on edge. Panic was narrowly averted during the night in right-wing circles when the communists. Hint U. S. Probing Arms Shipments to Guatemala Reds WASHINGTON (UP) — The United States has asked Sweden for information on the 4,900-ton Swedish freighter that delivered a cargo of arms to Guatemala, informed sources revealed today. The request is considered a tip-off that the United States has launched a thorough investigation of how the arms were shipped from Russian-controlled Poland to Guatemala. The data could be used in any formal action against Guatemala that the American republics might take under the Rio Defense Treaty. American officials said the fact may be called into play by any one of the parties although the United WASHINGTON (UP) — The White House said today it knew of no direct request by Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy to explain his side to President Eisenhower before the Army-McCarthy row "exploded" publicly. But Presidential Press Secretary James C. Hagerty would not discuss McCarthy's claim that an effort for an appointment was made through Victor A. Johnston and Maj. Gen. Wilton B. Persons, the President's liaison man with Congress. Johnston is director of the Senate Republican Campaign Committee. McCarthy said that sometime between Jan. 22 and Feb. 24 he asked Johnston to seek the appointment through Persons. "No Request" Heard Of Hagerty said he new of "no request by the Senator at that time for an appointment with the President." The Wisconsin Republican told reporters he tried to arrange the appointment because he thought the President "was not getting all the facts, and before we had a spectacle here, he should get my version. McCarthy said sometime between Jan. 22 and Feb. 24 he asked Victor A. Johnson, director of the Senate GOP Campaign Committee, to seek the appointment through Maj. Gen. Wilton B. (Jerry). Persons, the President's liaison man with Congress. "Jerry, whom I like a lot, hasn't called back," McCarthy said. Not a Snub But McCarthy said he did not consider this an anub since the President is "a busy man." He said he could not remember the exact date he sought the appointment, but said it was "well before this thing exploded." McCarthy meanwhile, said was "at a loss" to decide whether to go ahead with the Army-McCarthy hearings because of a presidential order forbidding testimony about a high level administration conference last Jan. 21 on the dispute. He would not give a flat yes or no on whether he and his staff will boycott the stormy hearings which are to resume Monday. But McCarthy said the President's secrecy order was "completely unfair to my staff" and said Mr. Eisenhower was "making a grave mistake." "I can't understand someone saying in one breath, 'I want all the facts on the table, I want the investigation to continue,' and in the next breath saying, 'I will not let the facts come out.'" McCarthy Other propaganda leaflets claimed the Hanoi-Haiiphong highway and railroad, which connect this inland capital with the sea, will be cut shortly and the city isolated. Population Jittery The French population of this city was on edge. Panic was narrowly averted during the night in one night club when the proprietor announced he heard all civilians had to be acavuated from Hanoi within a month. "Meanwhile," he said "We are offering free champagne to everyone so the Viets (Communists) won't get it." Business has come to a near had to be evacuated from Hanoi stand-still. Contracts are being cancelled daily. Housewives have loaded up on canned goods. The men of the city have accumulated hand grenades and pistols. Travel agencies said they are swamped with demands for steamer and airplane tickets. VETERAN Benefits May Be Increased WASHINGTON (UP)—The House Veterans Committee was reported ready today to approve a general increase in veterans pensions and compensation. The boost would run as high as 20 per cent, average more than 10 per cent, and add an estimated 290 million dollars to pension and compensation costs now running about $2,500,000,000 yearly. Virtually all the 3,676,872 ex-servicemen and their dependents drawing monthly checks from the Veterans Administration (as of March 31) would share in the increase, committee sources said. Rep. Edmund P. Radwan (R-NY), the bill's sponsor, and committee Chairman Edith Nourse Rogers (R-Mass) joined in a fore-theouse. So far in this Congress the veterans committee has been reported under pressure not to recommend any legislation calling for big new spending. Some committee Democrats were reported suspicious of the pension bill. They wondered whether the plan might be to report it from the veterans committee and possibly pass it in the House — where members could go on record for it. The request is considered a tip-off that the United States has launched a thorough investigation of how the arms were shipped from Russian-controlled Poland to Guatemala. The data could be used in any formal action against Guatemala that the American republics might take under the Rio Defense Treaty. American officials said the pact may be called into play by any one of the parties although the United States does not plan to take the initiative for fear of appearing to dictate to its neighbors. Informants said Sweden has been asked to report on what it knows about the activities of the Swedish ship, Alfhem. The request, it was learned, was made immediately after the State Department announced Monday night that the freighter was unloading "a large shipment of armament consigned to the Guatemalan government." Georgia Seeking Way to Sidestep Segregation Rule ATLANTA (UP)—Georgia today called a conference of top legal officers of 17 states to search for a legal way to sidestep a Supreme Court ban on segregated classrooms. A conference of attorneys general of all states affected by the Supreme Court's ruling last Monday was set here for next Wednesday in a move by Gov. Herman Talmadge to muster united opposition. A move began in Georgia at the same time to convene a special session of the state legislature to amend Georgia constitutional law to permit Talmadge to be elected for a second term. This move, publicly endorsed at its beginning by at least six state representatives, was made on its face at least to prolong his leadership of the deep South's opposition to de-segregation. Talmadge, reportedly willing to be "drafted" for another term if it can be legalized, declared that "so far as I am concerned Georgia is going to resist mixing the races." Pre-Registration for Kindergarten Scheduled Pre-registration for kindergarten for the fall term will be held in all Anaheim Elementary schools except Premont, beginning Monday, May 24, and continuing through Friday, May 28, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, officials revealed today. Parents having children who were born on or before Dec. 1, 1949, are urged to register their children. The following information should be furnished by the parent for each child to be registered. 1. Birth certificate, Baptismal certificate, or other proof of birth. 2. A list of illnesses and significant accidents. 3. Immunization and vaccination records. 4. The child's home routine. 5. The physical condition of the child. 6. The name of the family doctor. Registering a child at this time will be of great assistance to the school system in that the district may have a reasonably accurate estimate of the number of kindergarten pupils who will attend school here next year, and thus be enabled to make the necessary preparation during the summer months, official said. Parents are asked to register their child at the school in their attendance area. Shocked Officers Find Two Victims Of Crash Uninjured--But Naked SANTA ANA, (OCNS) — California Highway Patrol officials are today getting over the shocked surprise that dumbfounded them in the wee hours of yesterday morning when they investigated a crash in the Santa Ana Canyon area. Officers report they found an automobile with four occupants had turned over three times on Highway 14, hear Esperanza road. The crash was unusual but it was the occupants that startled them. The driver and one other occupant were nude. According to the official record which was made public today Highway Patrol officers found the Charles Wilks family unhurt after the crash. But the driver 29-year-old Charles Leffingwell Wilks and his 2 - year - old daughter Nora were naked. Mrs. Dorothy Wilks and their 4 - year - old son John were clothed, but police say the two adult members of the family were strongly intoxicated. They were so intoxicated, said the officers, that they couldn't remember where Mr. Wilk's clothes had been left. "We didn't want to put them in jail," said a highway patrol spokesman, "because of the children and the dog." The spokesman said the officers brought the family to the Orange headquarters of the patrol and attempted to find some clothes for the two nude Wilks'es. "Their car was demolished and we had to find some way of getting them to their Baldwin Park home." The patrolmen began to cope with the problem when officers, who reported in to their headquarters, were confronted with two nude Wilkses — and hurried off to find suitable wraps before the feminine office staff arrived. Finally, the officers loaded the family and the dog into a patrol car and sped them off to Los Angeles. "The dog wasn't housebroken either," sighed the spokesman, "the whole episode created somewhat of a problem."
