Soviet Scientist Denies Effect of Cobalt A-Bomb
MOSCOW (UP) — The Soviet army newspaper "Red Star" said today that warnings of the horrors of a cobalt bomb are Western imperialist scare stories, designed to frighten people with a new weapon.
The newspaper said there are "not sufficient grounds" for fears that a radioactive cobalt bomb could wipe out large areas of the earth's population.
(In Vienna today British Nobel prize winning physicist Sir George Thomson warned that use of a cobalt bomb in war would amount to world suicide. Other leading Western scientists have sounded similar warnings of the effects of a cobalt bomb, which would saturate the atmosphere with deadly radioactive isotope of cobalt which would retain their killing power for seven years.)
The article in "Red Star" was signed by an officer of engineers.
He said that imperialists claim explosion of a cobalt bomb can render entire areas inaccessible to human beings and prolong the time (of the contamination) by infecting the areas with radioactive cobalt dust.
"The there are not, however, sufficient grounds for such claims," the article said. It is well known that cobalt, having a long period of semi-disintegration, has comparatively low radiation qualities. Wide dispersion of cobalt dust must also be considered.
"Under these conditions it is difficult to expect very intense radiation," the article said.
Nab Bad Check Artist Wanted in County
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Los Angeles police Thursday arrested much wanted bad check artist Courtney Winfield Butcher wanted on seven counts of bad check passing in Orange County alone.
Butcher, using the alias of James R. Best, was arrested in the wake of a flood of forged checks that have poured down on Southland communities over a four-month period.
Butcher reportedly always cashed his checks in large amounts of over $80.
Police say the man stole a quantity of payroll checks from a Gardenena building supply firm. Los Angeles police are reportedly making a round-up of a large group of men supposed to be in a ring, as the result of Butcher's arrest.
Butcher was turned over to Orange County sheriff's deputies and lodged in the county jail.
Masked Psychopath Sought in Santa Ana
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — Santa Ana police are hunting this morning for a sex psychopath who wears a white mask and prowls Santa Ana streets during midnight hours.
Police say the man gets sexual gratification from exposing himself to startled women with a flashlight.
The man always wears the white mask.
Mrs. Lucille Hicks of Garden Grove and Mrs. Emma Pampton of Santa Ana, made seperate complaints, a few minutes apart, to the effect that the man had exposed himself to them in the vicinity of the Santa Ana Women's club.
Police describe the man as about 50 and short and stocky.
Tropical Fish Now Third Top Hobby
By WILLIAM EWALD
United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK (UP)—Fish... all kinds of fish... now are attracting people with fins.
Also people with sawbucks and e-notes.
Bernard Payson, whose company claims to be the largest and oldest tropical fish shop in the nation, says customers are spending fifty million clams a year for the scaly critters and that fish collecting has become the third most popular hobby, right behind stamps and photography.
Payson's firm alone has sold in 44 years more than one million tropical fish. His customers include an ocean liner skipper who keeps an aquarium on his bridge, a forest ranger who keeps his fish in a tank in the high Sierra and a Boston dowager who doesn't much care for fish but wants them to keep her cat company.
Most popular fish are the old standby—the Gupples, Swordtails, Hollies, Tetras and Barbs. But Payson points out that for the collector with adventure in his soul (and cash in his pocket) there are fish to fit the fancy.
"There one called the Leaf Fish which just drifts around in the water," says Payson. "Then there are the kissing Gouramis who smooch after each meal. Also the Glass Fish you can see through and the Archer Fish which knocks down flies and mosquitos by squirting a stream of water into the air."
The Chinchillas of the fish business are the Discus Fish. They run around $100 a pair but an exceptional pair of breeders may go for as much as $1,500.
Payson says fish collecting is relaxing. He says doctors recommend it.
There are not, however, sufficient grounds for such claims," the article said. It is well known that cobalt, having a long period of semi-disintegration, has comparatively low radiation qualities. Wide dispersion of cobalt dust must also be considered.
"Under these conditions it is difficult to expect very intense radiation," the article said.
