Bean is a better than average fighter, with 8 years pro experience; Johnson has a year and a month under his belt. From their records, this would appear to be an encore of last week's youth vs experience flasco, and no doubt Willie will be a prohibitive favorite, but don't overlook the fact that Young Jack has scored all his wins on KO's and is more ringwise than his number of fights would indicate. By DON THACKREY United Press Sports Writer SAN FRANCISCO (UP) The Sacramento Solens now know exactly where they were when the lights went out-right on top of the Pacific Coast League. The Sacs and the Padres were banging away happily at each other with the score at 6-4 for the Pads in the bottom of the fifth. Then the light company serves up its dark one. The lights went out as a transformer in left field blew, setting fire to a pole and bringing out a bunch of firemen who were not relief pitchers. The game will be finished tonight but in the meantime the Sacs lead the league by benefit of Hollywood Wood's 3-2 win over the Oakland Oaks. Los Angeles also won a clear one 8-7 from San Francisco and Portland took Seattle into camp by a 9-5 margin. As a result of last night's fuss game at San Diego, any team in the first division could head the loop after tonight's games. Slugfest Going Sacramento and San Diego were putting on a slugfest for their fans when they were interrupted. The Sacs scored four in the first and the Pads came back to tally three in the same frame. Then the Pads added three in the aa-yet-incomplete fifth. The Hollywood Stars bargain recklessly up the PCL standingings scored two unearned runs in the first inning to down Don Ferrarese and the Oaks and knock down the Acorns into second pace. Two walks and an error filled the bases and a walk to Jack Philips pushed in a run. The other tally came in on a double play. The final and winning run came in the sixth when Hollywood put together the only two singles that Stars got off Ferrarese. Roger Bowman was the winner giving up only five hits, one of them being a solo blow by Piper Davis in the third. Half Light Blues The Los Angeles got their ears early and held on in the face of hitting by the last place San Francisco Seals. The Angels tallied all eight of their runs in the first three innings, seven of them traceable to tally balls this Seals lost in the halftight. (UP) Don’t look for any miracle performances in this 28th annual West Coast Relays here tomorrow. The “miracle” in the track and field world has been performed so often lately that now the fans are starting to expect it. Most experts fell that the next miracle will be a leap of seven feet or better in the high jump. “Best I don’t look for it at Presio,” Brutus Hamilton, University of California coach, said today when asked if he thought that USC jumper Ernie Shelton might make the grade there. “Most high jumpers and pole vaulters have trouble with their leaps when performing under lights,” said Hamilton. “Of course, Shelton may not be one of these. But I really don’t expect to see a world record from him during night games.” Shelton, a towering youth, has cleared six feet, 10 inches; and was over the bar at seven feet, one-quarter inch in a practice jump, when his foot caught the bar on the way down. “The best chance for a world record at Fresno should come when Parry O’Brien throws the shot,” said Hamilton. “He appears capable of reaching nearly any distance he sets his mind on.” O’Brien recently had a toss of 60 feet, 5 1-4 inches, and then those who believe he might 65 feet before the end career. Editor Glover Gloms Golf Go It will be Dick Glover, AUHS Athletic Director, matched against Bill Payne for the Anaheim Golf Association Tournament title next Thursday afternoon at Meadowlark. Payne had previously won the second flight and Glover outlasted Dick Gay Tuesday for the flight one title in a game marked with polite attempts on the part of both gentlemen to hand the game over to the other. Glover was never ahead until the last hole when both men went into a Gaston and Alphonse routine. There are those who say the game was called on account of darkness and others who insist that it was time for Glover to report for work. The most reliable reports, however, have Glover sinking his ball in the 18th socket after several near-misses to finish one up. There is no truth to the rumor that Gay is still out there chopping away in the rough. The Glover-Payne affair and the presentation of assorted trophies will highlight the field day at Meadowbrook in which the feared Anaheim Association golfers will tangle with the La Habra Par-Boilers.
