Secrecy Surrounds Freeing Americans WASHINGTON (UP)—The State Department today drew tight secrecy wraps around its attempts to free 32 Americans jailed in Communist China. A spokesman said the United States will consider every opportunity to free the Americans, but he declined to talk about what is actually being done. "We will give careful consideration to every opportunity that presents itself in seeking the release of American citizens from imprisonment in China." The spokesman made the statement when asked whether U.S. representatives have contacted Red Chinese officials at the Geneva conference to learn more about the disappearance of three Americans more than a year ago in Far Eastern waters. A Red spokesman at Geneva recently admitted for the first time that the trio is in Chinese Communist hands charged with violating Chinese law. They are among 32 U.S. citizens jailed on the Chinese mainland. Car Manufacturers Aid In Smog Cure Research LOS ANGELES (UP)—The Automobile Manufacturers Assn. has contributed $50,000 to be used in amog research by the Southern California Air Pollution Foundation, it was announced today. Dr. Fred D. Fagg Jr., chairman of the foundation, said the money was pledged in a letter from William J. Cronin, managing director of the manufacturers' group in Detroit. The foundation also announced Government Reverses Butter Buying Trend WASHINGTON (UP)—The Agriculture Department reports it disposed of substantially more government-owned dairy surpluses in April than it bought. This was the first such trend since last October. The department bought 66,254,032 pounds of butter, cheddar cheese and dried milk under the new reduced price supports during April. It sold or donated 162,119,444 pounds of surplus stocks. Federal purchases averaged three million pounds a day last month compared with four million pounds during April of 1953. Processors sold about 407 million pounds of the three products to the government in March before dairy support levels were reduced from 90 to 75 per cent of parity. The department said government stocks at the end of April totaled 364,824,931 pounds of butter, 385,353,187 pounds of cheese and 59,503,724 pounds of dried milk. Gary Crosby to Star In Own Radio Show HOLLYWOOD (UP)—Gary Crosby, 21-year-old son of Bing Crosby, will star in his own half-hour musical-variety radio show starting June 6 as a summer replacement for his father, it was announced today. "The Gary Crosby Show" will mark his first venture into show business on his own. He made his radio debut in January, 1950, on his father's show. Plan Movie of John Paul Jones' Career HOLLYWOOD UP)—Plans by the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt for a movie based on the life of naval hero John Paul Jones have been incorporated into a film scenario by one of his sons. Elliott Roosevelt, second son of the late president, said yesterday he and Robert H. Nolan have collaborated in writing a scenario based on his father's ideas, notes and plans for a movie. Elliott said his father wrote a scenario in 1923 on the life of Jones and submitted it to film producer Adolph Zukor, but it was misplaced and never found. The scenario by Roosevelt and Nolan is titled, "I Have Just Begun To Fight." It also will serve as the basis for a novel. The elder Roosevelt was a student of naval history and spent 50 years studying the life and times of John Paul Jones, his son said. Red Offers to Forward Mail to Applegate MEDFORD, Ore. (UP)—A member of the Chinese Communist delegation to the Geneva conference has offered to forward mail to Richard Applegate, National Broadcasting Company correspondent imprisoned in China with two other Americans. In a cable to Applegate's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Applegate, Huang Hua, counselor to the Red delegation, said: "Your radiogram received. If you have letters, etc., for Richard Applegate, I would be glad to forward them for you." The Applegates had also asked the Chinese to release their son, but Huang made no mention of their plea. Applegate, a former United Press correspondent, was imprisoned with Don Dixon of International News Service and Capt. Ben Krasner, U.S. Merchant Marine. They disappeared while sail- Utt to Fight Federal Pension Cut Threat WASHINGTON (UP) — Rep. James B. Utt (R-Calif) said today he has assurances from members of House Ways and Means Committee that action will be taken to prevent a 19-million dollar cut in old age pension grants to California. Utt, member of the committee, said cut would be imposed under formula change for public assistance grants required by present law. It would take effect in October. State officials have told him it would mean $3 cut in monthly aged aid payment in state, he said. State officials including Gov. Goodwin J. Knight have urged California congressmen to support legislation preventing the cut. Nevada Judge Sets Death Sentence on Two RENO (UP) — District Judge Harold Taber today fixed the week of July 12 for the execution of convicted slayers Frank Pedrini and Leroy Linden in Nevada's lethal gas chamber. Pedrini, 53, Santa Rosa, and Linden, 32, of Los Angeles, were convicted last Friday of the murder of Lancaster carpenter Clarence Morgan Dodd, 36, last Oct. 28. The jury fixed the penalty at death. Pedrini, who was paroled from California's Folsom Prison after serving 15 years of a life term for the slaying of a Napa County grocer, muttered "Hell, why 60 days?
