Chessman Found Legally Sane SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (UP)—psychiatrist who examined Carr Chessman, 32-year-old author-co-convict awaiting execution in the San Quentin Prison gas chamber, has found him legally sane, the doomed man's attorney said today. The attorney, Berwyn A. Rice said Chessman was interviewed by Dr. Samuel Anderson of San Rafael for one hour and 15 minutes last night at the request of Warden Harley O. Teets. Rice said Anderson diagnosed Chessman as a psychopath, he said he was legally sane because he understood the difference between right and wrong. Chessman also underwent electroencephalogram, the results of which will be made known later today. The test was to determine whether Chessman’s brain was injured as the result of an attack of encephalitis many years ago. If the test shows an injury, presumably Rice will make another legal try to have the execution carried out. Otherwise, Chessman’s lawyer hope of reprieve lay with Goodwin J. Knight, who has indicated he will not intervene. To Die Friday Chessman is slated to die at a.m. (PDT) Friday. Rice told Chessman last night there was small hope for a priyee. He said Chessman w “very worried” and feeling very low.” Knight conferred with Rice y terday and agreed to review part of Chessman’s trial transcript. “He (Rice) was particularly concerned with the sufficiency the court reporter’s note Knight said. “I promised H only that I would re-examine t Approval by Council to advertise for bids for the improvement of West La Palma Ave. between Palm and point 100 feet East of West St., was given by City Trustees during the session. If It's News You'll See It In The Bulletin Rice told Chessman last night there was small hope for a prize. He said Chessman w "very worried" and feeling low. Knight conferred with Rice yesterday and agreed to review part of Chessman's trial script. "He (Rice) was particularly concerned with the sufficiency of the court reporter's notes. Knight said. 'I promised him only that I would re-examine the aspect.'" The court reporter died during the trial and another report filled in the transcript from his notes. Chessman has always challenged the accuracy of the transcript. Chessman was convicted for kidnapings, attempted rape, perversion and robbery as Angeles' "Red Light Bandit." Governor called his crimes "acious and unprintable." He was sentenced in 1948 uncalifornia's "Little Lindbergh Law," which provides thede penalty for kidnaping with intention to do bodily harm. Knight had indicated he would refuse clemency for Chessman epite appeals from many parts of the nation. Before conferring with the condemned man's lawyer, said: "People seem to forget just what Chessman did. One 18-year-old he kidnaped and raped is at Cairillo State Mental Hospital, mally deranged. What he did her was so horrifying that she her mind. Center If It's News You'll See It In The Bulletin Posture TRAINING "As the twig is bent the tree will grow." Is the posture of your child as important in your mind as the way your trees and shrubbery grow? You would be surprised at the lack of thought parents give the subject. Nagging about "standing up straight" is not as effective as study and application on clothes that do not pull down on the shoulders; correctly fitting shoes; stockings not too short; proper chairs to sit on; a proper sleeping position; food containing the nutritional needs. If your child tends to either hold the head to one side, stand with one shoulder higher than the other or with protruding stomach, walk with feet turned in or out—look for the reason, and start training that "twig" to grow into a graceful, healthier "tree." Physical education in the schools is doing wonders along these lines, but if your child seems to be a special problem, talk to your doctor. Bad hearing or sight, malnutrition, some infection causing chronic fatigue, faulty breathing from diseased adenoids or tonsils—the doctor will know whether any of these are contributing factors. Residents Ask Council To Fill in Sand Pit Demand by citizens of the area that the "Duval" sand pit located in the wash between Loara and West streets be filled in to abate a dangerous condition was present-ed to Council at yesterday evening's session in city hall. A delegation of residents of Redondo Drive addressed members of Council in their demand that water be pumped from the pit and that it be filled in immediately. A spokesman for the group told Council that there was in excess of 10 feet of water in the pit at the present time and that children had been swimming and playing on rafts in the pond. He told Council members that a portion of his property behind his home had crumbled into the pit, endangering his home. The spokesman pointed out that proximity of the new elementary school now under construction with in one block of the open pit would endanger small children who might stray there on their way from school. In answer to their plea, Mayor Pearson assured the group that immediate plans would be drawn to remedy the situation.
