Reds Remember Assassination by Swiss in 1923 By CHARLES M. MCCANN On the night of May 10, 1923, seven pistol shots barked in the dining room of the Hotel Cecil in Lausanne, Switzerland. One Russian diplomat slumped dead across the table at which he was dining. Two of his companions were wounded. The Russians were attending the historic Lausanne Conference at which the World War I peace treaty for Turkey was concluded. As the result of the assassination of Soviet Delegate Vaslov Vorovsky relations between Switzerland and Russia were embittered for years. For the Russian born Swiss assassin was acquitted. The verdict approximated one of justifiable homicide. Russian diplomats are heavily guarded wherever they go, at United Nations headquarters in New York and at international conferences. Swarms With Guards In Geneva, emphasis has been put on the seemingly exaggerated protection given Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav M. Molotov. Swiss troops and police, and his own secret police guard him. New wire fencing and barbed wire block off part of his villa. Molotov tried to get a continuous green traffic light for his armored limousine, but failed. Both the Russians and the Swiss probably remembered the Vorovsky assassination when they plan- INSULATION! Molotov tried to get a continuous green traffic light for his armored limousine, but failed. Both the Russians and the Swiss probably remembered the Vorovsky assassination when they planned the Geneva guard. Maurice Alexander Conradi, a young Swiss insurance man, took a train from Zurich to Lausanne on May 10, 1923. Conradi, born in Russia, nursed a bitter hatred against the Bolsheviks. He said they had tortured and killed his father and his uncle. Joined The Diners Conradi took with him pictures of the Russian delegates and he spent the afternoon watching their movements. The Russians were having a late dinner in solitary state when Conradi entered and took a nearby table. He started drinking heavily. He then rose and went to the Russian table. He drew a pistol and emptied it at the diners. Vorovsky was killed instantly. Two other Russians suffered wounds. Conradi went over to the horrified head waiter, surrendered his pistol and asked that police be called. As the years passed Soviet Russia got recognition from countries all over the world. But Swiss-Russian relations were not restored until 1946. L. A. Devise to Predict Quakes Being Developed PASADENA (UP)-Seismologists at the California Institute of Technology are working on a device that will predict earthquakes—but it may take them as long as 100 years to perfect it. Seismology professor Hugo Benloff said yesterday that his secular linear strain seismograph has been installed in a tunnel near Glendora, but there will not be any earthquake predicting "within our lifetime." Dr. Bonioff said anticipating a quake with his new instrument could only be done after years and years of establishing an earthquake fault's stress pattern. "We first have to ascertain what values of stress and strain a fault can reach before it has to let go," he said. "Once we get the pattern—know what pressure it can take—then we might get an idea when a certain fault is going to slip." The transformation, made in spare time by a home craftsman, provides added family living space for a comparatively small investment. Prefabricated paneling, nailed to the bare attic studs, was used for walls and ceiling. A fabulous pirate's map makes a pictorial scene of one entire gable, giving color and spaciousness to the room, and ending in a scenic pirate's beach with landing boats. Floor covering is easily maintained, sturdy, scuff-proof Kenflor vinyl tile in crisp kerry green, willow green and white marbelized tiles. The green and white stylized fish themetiles, which appear to be swimming in a shining sea, are echoed in the vibrant fish mobile suspended from the ceiling. Ample storage space is provided by the large desk, roomy bookshelves and big storage closets built beneath windows and under eaves.
