"Clown, My Life in Tatters and Emiles," by Emmett Kelly, tells the story of how he came to impersonate the role of a tattered and torn clown, how his fame took him all over this country and Europe, how he survived the terrible holocaust that destroyed the Big Top. It is also the story of the circus itself with all its romance, adventure, comedy and tragedy.
"Liberia," by Charles Murrow Wilson, is the story of this small country on the West coast of Africa. It is no small achievement on Liberia's part that it survived as a nation for over one hundred years. Liberia began as a series of tiny colonies of freed American slaves who with the native people have developed through experimental groupings to the status as the only republic in Africa.

USC Cancer War Gains Cited by President.
Steady progress in the University of California's state-wide "30 years' war" on cancer has been reported by President Robert Gordon Sproul.
President Sproul summarized the 7th annual report for the year 1953, of the University's statewide Cancer Research Coordinating Committee, submitted to him by its chairman, Dr. Andrew H. Dowdy, chairman of the department of radiology in the School of Medicine on the Los Angeles campus.
The annual report contains summaries of research conducted during the past year by more than 73 investigators and their associates working on some 150 different statements in the report.
total of six the murders of which the Santo gang has been convicted and was the second death sentence for Santo and Perkins.
The trio was found guilty of the brutal bludgeon slayings of Chester grocer Guard Young, his two adopted daughters, and their neighborhood playmate, Michael Salle, near Chester Oct. 10, 1952.
Mrs. Henson, 31, a cocktail waitress, maintained throughout her defense that she had no doubts that Santo and Perskins were guilty of the crime but that she, herself knew nothing of it until the following day.
Santo, 53, leader of the notorious "Mountain Murder Mob," and Perkins, his 45-year-old triggerman, were brought to Quincy to stand trial from San Quentin's death row where they awaited execution.
The jury was given the case at 3:35 p.m. yesterday and deliberated some 10 hours before returning the verdicts.
The murders had stolen $7100 in cash from Young in the brutal crime, committed as the grocer returned to Chester from a Westwood bank.
President Sproul said the program of cancer research and teaching last year operated on a budget of $1,531,562, slightly more than 1952. He said that last year's annual state appropriation of $303,295, together with $30,695 from endowed funds, provided the basis of a continuing research program.
The presence of this program enabled the University to attract the much larger sums from other sources. President Sproul said. Among major research contributions were the following: U.S. Public Health Service, $521,280; Atomic Energy Commission, $260,-000; American Cancer Society, $15,990; Damon Runyon Memorial Fund, $13,920. Private donations were also significant, and supported investigations that otherwise could not have been undertaken.
President Sproul quoted the following statement in the report by Dr. Michael B. Shimkin, secretary of the Cancer Research Coordinating Committee:
"The American people apparently have accepted the fact that in cancer research their scientists are engaged in a thirty years' war and not a five-year skirmish. When visualized as a strategic plan, eventual victory over cancer seems inevitable."
