Elks Play Artesia for Bulletin Softball Tourney Trophy It will be the Elk's softball team playing Artesia Christian Reform for the Anaheim Bulletin Trophy tonight at City Park starting at 7:30 p.m. That much was decided at night when the two edged their opposition by one run counts. Who will win the beautiful trophy standing nearly three feet high won't be decided until after the Elks and Artesia have locked horns. The Elks downed Robertshaw-Fulton, 2-1, in the first contest last night at City Park. It was a case of a good hitting club being held in check by a strong defensive nine. But the heavy hitting Elks managed to squeeze out one more run than Robertshaw-Fulton, scoring in the bottom of the second and third innings. They racked up eight hits, one a homer by B. Walker. The losers managed two beautiful double plays, one in the first and one in the fourth that put a serious crimp in the Elk's scoring hopes. Good all around defensive play held off other Elk scoring bids, as they put men on base in every inning but couldn't work them around to home plate. The Elks seemed to have the edge in the pitching department, allowing only one hit, fanning ten Robertshaw-Fulton batters and walking three. Only one Elk went down swinging and four managed to get their base on balls. The second contest went 10 innings before three straight hits gave Artesia Christian Reform its winning run to best Sacred Heart, 1-0. Although scoreless for nine innings, the game was a real thriller. Sacred Heart had several good opportunities to win. In the seventh R. Villasenor clouted out a lead off triple and things were looking up for Sacred Heart. But this an infield out. The winners had four hits and two of the Sacred Heart player's triple. R. Salazar knocked the formal presentation of ball Tournament team trophy letin office. Robertshaw-Fulton AB R R. Steinborn, 1b 2 0 H. Martinez, p 3 0 B. Swearingen, c 3 0 C. Horton, cf 3 0 R. It will be open during weekends in winter months and every day all summer long. County, state and national Izaak Walton Leaguers, including the Anaheim chapter, participated in the official dedication of the pool — which was named by 11-year-old Carole Anderson, 12452 Elmwood Ave., as "Kids' Haven." The pool is open only to children up to 14 years of age. The Grove Ikes conceived the idea of having the "old fashion fishin' hole" and secured permission from the county to use the sinking basin as a natural fish pond. The area is located at Chapman and West Aves. ARADE CAR FRALEY Writer of another man who is a sporting saga in his own right. The year was 1924 and the four were rosy cheeked young men then playing a game of football for Notre Dame against Army. They were good yet possibly no better than many another backfield in the days before and since. But they captured the imagination of a man getting high up in the press box of the Polo Grounds in New York City. That's when with his typewriter he "made" them. Bill Payne has worked his way up through a series of matches to the number one spot of his flight by defeating Sully Roquet in last Sunday's link battle, 3 and 2. Meanwhile the first of the two flights was still without a champion with Carl Rau waiting to play the winner between Dick Glover and Frank Donaldson. The man emerging from this match will then be pitted against the winner between Dick Gay and Warren Lampman. Donaldson gives away six strokes to Glover which will force him to hustle today to take the AUHS athletic director. Glover feels that Donaldson rates the edge but admits that the handicap makes an upset possible if Glover can keep following the tourney, tickets will be available for a field day with La Habra at Meadowlark. All of these who participated in the tourney are expected to be on hand. May 20 has been set as the date of the field day, according to handicapper Les Moon. Cups will be presented to the winners and runners-up of the two flights comprising the current tourney. Dinner will follow the field day. They rode again "Under a gray October sky the four horsemen rode again today." "In legend they are known as Jamme, Death, Prestillence and Destruction." "Actually their names are Stuhl, Greher, Crowley, Miller and Layen." Thus did Grantland Rice importize the "Four Horsemen" of Notre Dame. And as you sat with them around a convivial table you knew that they appreciated their baptism back there in the long ago. It was Dayden who put it into words when he said: "We might have been just another backfield for all our success on the field. But that name captured the public imagination. We were seniors at the time and the year was already half over, but from that moment on we had it made." His mates in those old glory days nodded happy agreement. They were successful men all. Layden is vice president of the General American Transportation Company in Chicago. Little Harry Stuhldreher is a vice president of the U.S. Steel Company, in Pittsburgh. Smiling Sleepy Jim" Crowley is general manager of a television station in Cranston, Pa., and chunky Don Miller is a highly successful Cleveand attorney.
