Punishment Slated As C.S. Subject Penalties inherent in sin and fear are destroyed as thought and desire are purified points out the Sunday lesson-sermon on "Everlasting Punishment" in all Christian Science churches. The golden text from James reads, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleansse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." The healing of the impotent man from John's Gospel is related. Jesus questions the man, "Wilt thou be made whole?" Later Jesus commands him, "Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked." Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Christ Jesus overruled the error which would impose penalties for transgressions of the physical laws of health; he annulled supposed laws of matter, opposed to the harmonies of Spirit, lacking divine authority and having only human approval for their sanction." "Let us remember that the eternal law of right, though it can never annul the law which makes sin its own executioner, exempt man from all penalties but those due for wrong-doing." If It's News You'll See It In The Bulletin Cypress Notes CHRISTIE DAVIS Anab m 60529 Mrs. L. E. Matthew entertained a group of friends of her son, Gary, Wednesday afternoon with a picnic at the Anaheim Park. The afternoon was spent in playing games. After the festive game and gift time refreshments of birthday cake and ice cream was served to Jimmie Long, Jack Callahan, David Davis, Lawrence Killen, Donna and Virginia Matthew, sisters of the honoree and Gary. The Hallowe'en motifs is being carried out in a number of parties which are being given for the youngsters of the junior age group. Forty-eight students of the Junior Department of the Sunday School in the Cypress Church of the Nazarene met last Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock for an afternoon of fun. The youngsters wore costumes and awards were made. At six o'clock the group met in the social hall and enjoyed a dinner. Mrs. Mary Chapman and Mrs. Melvin Callahan, teachers, directed the afternoon's activities. Clergy Discusses Alcoholism Role Episcopal ministers, educators, and health researchers posed for themselves the basic question, “What is the place of the church and clergy in preventing alcoholism?” at the third annual New Hampshire seminary on alcoholism, held last week at North Conway, New Hampshire. Having explored the nature of the problem in previous years, the participants this year concentrated on its prevention. Speakers from the New Hampshire Council of Churches and Religious Education and the New Hampshire State Department of Health, Division on Alcoholism, the organizations sponsoring the annual seminar, and from the Yale University Center of Alcohol Studies and the U.S. Public Health Service led preliminary discussions on the roles of education, mental hygiene, therapy, and public health to the prevention of alcoholism. The seminar was climaxed by a panel discussion, presided over by Rt. Rev. Charles F. Hall, Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, which focused on the “Place of the Churches in Prevention.” 11 a.m.; C.A., 6:30 p.m.; evening Bible study, 7:45. Bishops, priests, and laymen from the 325 dioceses of the world-wide Anglican Communion will gather to pursue the theme "The Call of God and the Mission of the Anglican Communion." The Lambeth Conference, a meeting of all Anglican bishops which meets once every decade, in 1948 initiated the plans for the Congress to answer the widely felt need for a more representative and comprehensive voice for the Anglican Communion. The Pan-Anglican Congress, which met in London in 1908, provides the only precedent for such a convocation for, although plans had been laid for another meeting in 1818, World War I prevented their realization. Because the anticipated attendance at the Congress numbered 1000 the conference will be divided into four sections, eachto discuss a topic within the overall theme: Our Worship, Our Messages and Our Work. As Presiding Bishop of the host nation, the Rt. Rev. Henry Knox Sherrill will preside over the meeting and he and the Archbishop of Canterbury will address the opening session. To enable representatives to come from as many Anglican communities as possible, many Episcopal dioceses in the United States are planning to sponsor delegations from more distant places, including India, Africa, Japan, Australia, and Korea. The delegates will then be invited to make speaking tours of the sponsor-dioceses so that individual parishes may also share in the undertakings of the Congress. Claim Infringment On Freedom of Speech Despite safeguards of the law, freedom of thought and speech in American radio and television for the first time have been infringed. An eminent woman radio commentator warned delegates to the recent assembly of United Church Women of the National Council of Churches. Miss Pauline Frederick, news commentator for NBC, described violations of free speech as man-ouvered by political demagogues. "The economic pressure stemming from the passions aroused by the political medicine men have been known to force sponsors to cancel their sponsorships and stations to stop programs," Miss Frederick said. She declared that these "purveyors of uniformity of thought and speech are bent on running those out of business who attempt to exercise free speech until they, too, conform." Another warning on the loss of freedom in America was sounded by a noted educator who challenged the church women to "stand up and fight" for freedom of religion and education in the United States because "tomorrow will be too late." STATE WORLD POSITION America's powerful position in the world of nations, achieved "through no special merit of virtue," must be paid for in "dollars and sweat, perchance in blood and tears" and in patience, humility and understanding," declares the 1953 World Order Day Message of the National Council of Churches. Pointing out that an increasingly interdependent world the decisions of the U.S. Congress and Administration have a deep impact on the lives of millions of persons throughout the world, the message warns that "with the continuous development of increasingly destructive weapons of war, it has become more urgent than ever before for the United States to exercise its power with wisdom and restraint."
