NCAA Television Headache Grows Steadily Worse By ED SAINSBURY CHICAGO (UP) — The actual sales of tickets to college football games could become the pressure point which might upset the National Collegiate Athletic Association's current control of grid television. It was conceded today by NCAA officials that the national policy of substituting sell-out college games on a local scale for the national "Game of the Week" has no limit. Thus if some Saturday in the future enough tickets are sold to produce sell-outs of numerous standout spectacles, there could be as many as 20 or more exceptions to the nationally selected "Game of the Week." Such a result could make the restrictive NCAA policy of the game of the Week" meaningless. For instance, this Saturday, Notre Dame has sold out its Navy game and will televise it locally. Presumably Pennsylvania at Michigan could be sold out and televised in Detroit; Northwestern at Ohio State could sell out and be televised in Columbus. Or in other areas, Davidson at Harvard could be a topic for Boston video, or perhaps Syracuse at Holy Cross; South Carolina at Maryland could go on Washington screens, Kentucky at Rice would be available for Houston sets, Texas at Southern Methodist for Dallas, Army at Tulane for New Orleans, California at UCLA for Los Angeles and Georgia Tech at LOS ANGELES, Calif. — UCLA All-American candidate Paul Cameron was with in a notch of the great Kenny Washington today following the Burbank, Calif., Bomber's greatest running day against Washington State last Saturday (Oct. 24). Amassing a total of 121 yards in a mere eight tries at carrying the ball, Cameron boosted his three-year yardage total to 1706 yards, second only to Washington's 2275 set in 1937-38-39. Complete figures show that Cameron has now carried the ball 323 times for a net of 1300 yards and an outstanding 4.02 average. Leading the Pacific Coast Conference by a wide margin this fall, this totals are 89-585-71-515 for a 5.77 average. Still leading Coach Red Sanders' Bruins in no less than seven statistical departments, Cameron holds a strong edge in the PCC race for touch down responsibility honors. He has now run for eight and passed for four. Wingback Don Stalwick, the lean senior from Wallace, Ida., who began the season in 19th place among all-time UCLA ground-gainers, is currently in 17th place with 115 carries for 669 (613 net) and a 5.33 average. Pushing ex-fullback Bill Stits for the top wingback berth, Stalwick stands a good chance of moving ahead of at least a half dozen former Bruin "greats" before the final game of the 1953 season. Following last weekend's 44-7 rout of Washington at Ste, this Saturday's homecoming contest pits the PCC's top two total-offense leaders against each other in a test that could determine the 1953 championship. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh at Minnesota would go to the other stations on the network as the "Game of the Week." It would be possible to find "exceptions" for virtually every city with television, and it was possible likewise that a combination of major games could arise producing numerous sell-outs and perhaps television.
