Iwo Jima Flag Hero Gets Job
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Ex-Marine Ira Hayes, who participated in the famous flag raising at Iwa Jima, held a new job today as chauffeur for the divorced wife of comedian Dean Martin.
The full-blooded Pima Indian from Arizona was arrested in Chicago two weeks ago and pleaded guilty of being drunk and disorderly.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Martin, 31, said she read about Ira's troubles "and I decided to give him the job."
She said Hayes told her that a too friendly public, eager to do something for him because of the flag raising at Iwo Jima in World War II, had led to his downfall.
Hayes flew here to accept the job at the Martin home located near the Santa Monica mountains in West Los Angeles after spending two weeks in a sanitarium near Chicago. He left there with $1165 raised by the Chicago Sun-Times.
"I won't make anyone regret helping me," he said.
Mrs. Martin said he will be paid $300 a month, plus room and board.

WASHINGTON (UP)—Sen Karl E. Mundt says his investigation of a government decision to give Russia plates to make German occupation currency shows how Communist spies operate.
The South Dakota Republican said the American action resulted at least partly from pressure enrollee agents put on "high" of Court of the State of California, in and for the County of Orange, or to present the same, with the necessary vouchers; to the undersigned at his or her place of business, to state of Bank of America, Bldg. Anaheim, California within six months after the first publication of this notice.

WHEREAS, Union Development Company, Inc., owner and holder of said note, heretofore demanded that said Trustee sell said property and on July 22nd, 1953 received in the office of the County Recorder to assess County Book 2842, page 619 of Official Records thereof, a notice of said default and of its election to cause sale property to be sold and more than three months have now elapsed since the recording of said notice. WASHINGTON (UP)—Sen Karl E. Mundt says his investigation of a government decision to give Russia plates to make German occupation currency shows how Communist spies operate.
The South Dakota Republican said the American action resulted at least partly from pressure espionage agents out on "high officials' of our Treasury Department."
Mundt added, however, that Henry Morgenthau Jr., treasury secretary at the time, and two other former high U.S. officials declared they never suspected this subversive influence.
Mundt has been conducting the currency investment. He ended hearings in the case yesterday.
A number of government officials opposed giving the plates because Russia refused to be held accountable for the marks she intended to print.
Mundt said Russia actually turned out 258 million dollars worth of marks.
