GLEANED FROM FILE THIRTEEN Compiled by Jim Duncan From the Wires of United Press A near crisis almost developed in the United Nations early this week due to use of a word which caused untold confusion among the translators. Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., U.S. delegate to the United Nations, stopped translators dead in their tracks when he accused Soviet Russia of "shemanigans" in the Security Council. A half hour later the French translator interpreted it as "bad pleasantries." Soviet Delegate Andrei Vishinsky called it "something referring to machinations." So that Civil Defense personnel won't feel neglected, here are a couple of stories, one good and one bad. In Fairfield, Calif., Civil Defense Director R. M. Cole said he hopes to get more equipment for the city's civil defense unit. The unit's equipment now consists of one small Gelger counter. This character believed that practice must perfect. George Veloch, 40, of Whitney, Ind., was asked to turn in his military civil defense firearms and see the firearms run. When Municipal Judge John Sullivan reached the Minneapolis courthouse she heard a man calling himself father. She did not enter her father's courtroom until the gallly entered speeches. Up in San Francisco, Pan American Airways sold today its last sight across the Pacific was "strictly for the birds." Featherly Named to Advisory Committee SANTA ANA—Orange County Supervisor G. M. Featherly, of Santa Ana, today has been named to the advisory committee of the Senate Interim Committee on Subdivision Development and Planning, it was announced by State Sen. Arthur M. Breed Jr. of Oakland, chairman of the interim group. The advisory board is planned to work closely with the senate group in order that "those who operate under the subdivision laws play the most important part in shaping them." Featherly is vice-chairman of the planning and Public Works Committee of the County Supervisors Association of California. Beek Named President Of Legislative Group NEWPORT BEACH—Joseph A. Beek, Secretary of the State Senate since 1919 today is president of the American Legislative Officers Association, recently organized in New Orleans. Beek and Arthur A. Chinnus, Chief of the Assembly represented California at the conclave which was attended by some 70 legislative officers throughout the country. Promoting the meeting, Beek cited the purpose of the new convention is to simplify and expand legislative proceeding and to aid in promoting the dignity, integrity and sovereignty of the individual states. Three-Year Girl Ban Given County Youth SANTA ANA—James Edwin Williams, 19, must stay away from girls for the next three years as one of the conditions of probation ordered by Superior Judge Franklin G. West. Judge West meted a 60-day jail sentence as a further punishment for the youth for contributing to the delinquency of a 16-year-old girl. Williams was arrested last Aug. 29, after a wild chase when officers were investigating his parked auto in a lonely spot. He is completing a jail term for reckless driving arising out of the chase.
