HOLLYWOOD (UP)—A broken gas main exploded on a Hollywood street last night, starting a fire that sent flames shooting 40 hours. No one was injured. The explosion tore a 20-foot gash in the main, woke hundreds of nearby residents and shattered windows in the immediate area. The blast occurred when the main was crushed by a storm drain excavation cave-in. Released fumes were ignited by flares in the repair area. Police held back thousands of spectators while firemen wetted down adjacent buildings and evacuated one apartment house. Ten pieces of fire equipment were called to the scene, but the flames were allowed to burn until gas company workers shut off valves leading to the broken main. Hoover Asserts Youth of Nation Must Sacrifice NEW YORK (UP) — Former President Herbert C. Hoover told the youth of the nation yesterday that they must be prepared to make unselfish sacrifices to defend "the greatest heritage that can come to man, national freedom and personal liberty." "We hear much criticism of our government," Mr. Hoover said, "and a lot of it is justified. No government is perfect, because human beings are not perfect. "But let me say," he added, "that despite many disheartening things, by and large the ideals of our country are still strong. And under our unique American system, we have given more opportunities to every boy and girl than any other government." The 79-year-old statesman spoke on the Ford Foundation Television Workshop program, "Excursion." Former President Harry S. Trueman previously had addressed the nation's youth on the same program. Mr. Hoover reviewed a lifetime that included living "in nearly 40 different foreign countries under many kinds of government," and said he had come to the conclusion that America's two-party system was the best means of running a nation that man has yet devised. Election of a president and his party to power for a term of four years, Mr. Hoover said, insures a stability that is lacking in European forms of government that allow a change in leadership whenever the opposition can muster a majority vote. CUTTER WASHINGTON (UP)—Two specifications next month will give Democrats a chance to cut Repub. control of the House down to zor-thin margin of one vote. The elections will be held Nov. 10 in New Jersey and Nov. 10 in Florida to replace Republican voters who have resigned. Present lineup in the house is Republicans, 214 Democrats, Independent and the two vaxes. The Democrats wouldn't control even if they won both New Jersey and California lions. But, they could reduce GOP margin to the lowestible point. GOP control of the Senate hasady been reduced to an absomargin. In fact, there are Democrats (48) in the Senate there are Republicans (47). Republicans retain control of state chairmanships and other organizational machinery only with support of independent Wayne L. Morse (Ore.) and the potential tie-breaking vote of Vice President Richard M. Nixon. The surprise Democratic victory in Wisconsin's ninth Congressional District last week put new emphasis and importance on the New Jersey and California races. Democrats believe their best bet lies in the California contest. It is a four-way race for the seat vacated by Republican Norris Poulson when he resigned to become mayor of Los Angeles. The candidates are Glenard Lipscomb and John Collier, both Republican members of the state legislature; Attorney George L. Arnold, who has the backing of the district Democratic organization; and Irving Markheim, who lost to Poulson in 1952 by a vote of 119.-799 to 17,601. Arnold is the son of former Federal Judge Thurman Arnold. There's No Substitute for Paid Circulation. Gov. Dewey Demands Resignation of Aide ALBANY, N.Y., (UP) — Gov. Thomas E. Dewey stood firm today in his demand that acting Lt. Gov. Arthur H. Wicks quit because of his visits to a labor racketeer 'n Sing Sing prison. The governor, close associates said, was not swayed by Wicks' detailed explanation of his calls on extortionist Joseph (Joey) Fay for help in settling local labor disputes. The veteran senator gave his side of the case in a statewide broadcast yesterday. Dewey, who has laid his party leadership and political future on the line in his fight with Wicks, heard the broadcast from his farm at Pawling, N.Y. In his broadcast, Wicks said he went to Fay because he was the "one man" with enough influence to settle union jurisdictional d'aputes.
