Broadway Opposite Post Off Sale of Savings Bonds in County Shows Increase In the first nine months of the year, sales of U.S. Savings Bonds in Orange County have increased nearly 50 per cent over last year's purchases in the same period, as September sales of $181,269.69 brought the 1953 total to $2,537,-925.17. Reported by Harry L. Hanson, Savings Bonds Committee chairman for the county, these sales of Series E and H bonds for the nine-month period compare with a total of $1,-723,362.33 at September-end 1952. September sales in the eleven Southern California counties, as announced by J., B. Messick, State Director of the Savings Bonds Division, amounted to $10,975,802.58. Total Southern California sales so far this year reached $118,580,226.-30, as compared to $84,492,742.10 invested during the same months last year. This represents a gain of more than 40 per cent over the January-September period a year ago, the Treasury official said, and continues to hold an "appreciable lead" over the national average. As of August, Messick stated that the national gain was 27.89 per cent above 1952 sales, while the Southland sales were up more than 42 per cent. With the steady growth in the number of persons participating in the Payroll Savings Plan, combined with the increased purchases of bonds by individuals attracted to the improved earnings features of Savings Bonds, Messick indicated that the Treasury expects the favorable trend to continue. WILSON WASHINGTON (UP)—The treasury’s books showed today the new Republican administration has slightly topped former President Truman’s corresponding spending record in the first three and one-half months of the current fiscal year. The Republicans have collected a bit less in taxes than Mr. Truman exacted. And they are further in the red for the 1954 fiscal year so far than was Mr. Truman in the corresponding period of fiscal 1953. The national debt still is rising and stands today only $2,008,000 below the statutory limit which inherited a free-spending, big-deficit budget from Mr. Truman last January. They are having trouble with their spending brakes and more with the overall effort to balance the budget, a project which also involves taxes. The foregoing facts are basic in the fiscal policy decision now being sought by the administration and to be debated when Congress returns. In nearly eight years of office, Mr. Truman broke all records for taxing and spending. The tax and spending record in the current fiscal year underlines the hard fact that Republican economy efforts far have accomplished no more than just about hold the line on both fronts. Here are the fiscal year figures from July 1, as of mid-october. This year (Rep.) expenses $2,547,000,000 receipts $15,094,000 Last year (Dem.) expenses $2,772,000 receipts $15,247,000 Mr. Truman’s spending spiral was ever upward. He spent $66,145,000,000 in fiscal 1952 and went in the red by more than $4,000,000,000. Less than a month before leaving office last January, Mr. Truman sent to Congress his last budget. Truman’s Budget It proposed $78,587,000,000 to be spent in the 1954 fiscal year. The deficit was estimated at about $10,000,000,000. The Republicans have revised those figures downward it spend about $72,000,000,000 for a deficit under $4,000,000,000. Budget Director Joseph M. Dodge has pride in that clip of about $6,500,000,000 from the budget figure which Mr. Truman said was at rock bottom and could not be lowered. But the first budget duds as the easiest. May Erupt Into Full-Scale Warfare The uneasy, four-year truce between Israel and her Arab neighbors threatens to blow up in a renewal of full-scale warfare. And so, another piece of unfinished business ranking with Korea, Trieste and the division of Germany comes forebly to world attention. It dropped unexpectedly into the laps of United States, British and French foreign ministers meeting in London during the last weekend. They promptly placed the unwanted baby on the doorstep of the United Nations. Counter Attack The spark that touched off the latest threat was an Israeli raid across the Jordan border, in which Jordan authorities claim, 68 persons, including women and children, were killed and nine wounded in the Jordan village of Kibya. The raid followed an earlier one from Jordan across the Israeli frontier in which a woman and two children were killed. Except for its ferocity, the Israeli raid was no different from literally hundreds of others which have occurred regularly along the Israeli-Jordan border since the signing of the U.N. engineered truce in 1940. The Common Enemy In the 12 months ending in June, 1953, the United Nations mixed armistice commission ruled on nearly 200 such border raids, with blame attached to both sides. Arab leaders frankly told U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles during his visit last spring that, while they have no sympathy with the Communist philosophy, their common enemy is Tel-Aviv and not Moscow. The differences are more than religious ones between Moslem and Jew, and deeper than Arab re-mentation against this new Jewish state which sprang up in territory which the Arabs considered their own. The Arabs fear that Israel intends to continue to annex territory, at Arab expense. O'Konski (R-Wis.) has urged South Korean President Syngman Rhee to ignore the armlistice and "liberate" the anti-Communist prisoners held by the United Nations in Korea. He charged that the United States has been guilty of "unprecedented and uncivilized infamy" for its part in the U.N. handling of the prisoners. In a letter to the South Korean President, O'Konski said that if Rhee freed the prisoners "the free people the world over would praise you, and if need be, die, rather than be an observer to this sadistic and crudest of international infamous." "The entire civilized world is shoched at the shameful mistreatment of the 23,000 helpless patriots are receiving from the United Nations and the so-called 'neutral commission,'" O'Konski wrote. "The actions of these groups including my country will go down in history as the blackest and cruelest inhuman crime of the period," O'Konski told Rhee. "Would that God grant you the courage and vision to liberate those helpless patriots." Kin of Uranium King Die in Home Fire WARROAD, Minn., (UP)—The young nephew and niece of the discoverer of multi-million dollar uranium deposits in Utah, were burned to death in a fire which gutted their home yesterday. Mason Pick, 7, and Marilyn, 12, children of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pick, were found under a bed where firemen said they apparently crawled for protection. Vernon J. Pick, an uncle of the children, discovered the extensive deposits of uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau near Harksville, Utah, about a year ago. The children's 80-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Fred Pick, was hospitalized with third degree burns on her arms, back and face.
